Role Purpose
At Travelex, we are developing modern data technology and data products. Data is central to how we define and sell our foreign currency exchange products. Our relationship with customers is deeply data-driven.
The Data Engineering Manager (DEM) owns the design and delivery of all data flows to and from our data platform, underpinning crucial data products. The DEM leads a significant transformation, including event-driven and transactional enhancements to our enterprise data architecture and expansion of our data warehousing capabilities.
Main Responsibilities:
* Collaborate with the Director of Data Engineering and IT Leadership to enhance data maturity.
* Engage with leaders across domains and geographies to maintain strong business alignment.
* Ensure data engineering initiatives align with business priorities.
* Promote a product mindset, balancing technical efficiency with business value.
Team Management
* Lead the Data Engineering team, providing supervision, coaching, and development.
* Work with the Data Delivery Manager to improve team productivity and velocity.
* Oversee planning sessions, standups, retrospectives, and team meetings.
* Define and deliver technical goals & OKRs collaboratively.
Technical Leadership
* Own the architecture of the data platform, ensuring scalability, reliability, and security.
* Drive modernization by transitioning from legacy systems to a scalable platform.
* Act as a lead expert for technologies such as AWS, DBT, Airflow, and Databricks.
* Establish best practices for data modeling, ingestion, storage, streaming, and APIs.
Governance & Standards
* Ensure technical decisions are justified, documented, and aligned with business needs.
* Lead reviews and approvals for Data Engineering, Data Science, and Data Visualization projects.
* Promote best practices in data governance, security, and compliance.
Operational Excellence
* Oversee monitoring of live data products and respond to data incidents.
* Improve data quality working with data owners and managers.
* Collaborate with engineering teams for system integration.
* Reduce technical debt while managing resources effectively.
* Stay updated with industry trends and recommend relevant technologies.
* Lead analysis, assessment, and design activities to influence decisions.
* Foster collaboration with data analysts and scientists.
Requirements – Skills and Experience
* Strong leadership, engaging team player, curious listener.
* Excellent problem-solving skills with experience in complex data products.
* Expertise in data and cloud engineering, including ingestion, transformation, and storage.
* Hands-on experience with AWS and data services.
* Advanced skills in SQL, Python, DBT, Airflow, and Redshift.
* Proficiency in coding, scripting, debugging, testing, and deployment.
* Ability to mentor others in best practices.
* Product mindset focused on user needs.
* Experience designing end-to-end data solutions.
* Implementing data governance, cataloging, lineage, and metadata management.
Preferred:
* Experience with Databricks.
* Understanding of data platform interaction with marketing and engagement platforms.
* Knowledge of APIs, streams, webhooks, and SOA.
* Understanding of security and data protection best practices.
* Familiarity with compliance standards like GDPR, PCI, FCA.
* Flexible delivery approach, combining methodologies like Kanban, Scrum, Lean.
* Passion for staying updated with new tools and methods.
* Curiosity about business requirements and culture.
