Job Title: Caretaker Hours: Core hours are 9:00am–5:00pm, Monday to Friday, with some flexibility required depending on the needs of the setting Salary: 12.90 per hour Location: Covering the East Coast Essex area Purpose of the Role The Caretaker plays a vital role in ensuring the nursery environment is safe, clean, and welcoming for children, families, and staff. They oversee the day-to-day upkeep of the building and grounds, carrying out light maintenance, cleaning, and security duties to keep the nursery running smoothly. Key Responsibilities Open and close the nursery premises, ensuring the site is secure at all times. Carry out routine cleaning, tidying, and checks to ensure all areas are safe and ready for use. Undertake minor repairs such as changing lightbulbs, tightening fixtures, or painting touch-ups. Ensure outside areas (playgrounds, gardens, pathways) are safe, clear, and well-presented. Oversee waste management, recycling, and stock of cleaning materials. Report larger repair needs promptly to the Nursery Manager or external contractors. Support fire safety and health & safety checks (e.g. alarm testing, emergency exits, first aid boxes). Be a welcoming presence on-site, helping to keep the nursery safe and secure for children and families. Skills & Qualities Full UK driving licence Reliable and trustworthy, with a strong sense of responsibility. Basic handyman/DIY skills. Awareness of safeguarding and commitment to child safety. Flexible and practical, able to respond to daily needs.
