CoronerSupportOfficerCoronersareindependentjudicialofficersappointedbythelocalauthority.Theyinquireintodeathsreportedtothemwhichappeartobeviolent,unnaturalorofunknowncausesorwherethedeceaseddiedincustodyorotherwiseinstatedetention.Thecoronerwillseektoestablishthemedicalcauseofdeath,throughapost-mortemexaminationifnecessary.Unlessthepost-mortemexaminationshowsthatthedeathwasduetonaturalcauses,aninquestwillbeheld.
CoronerSupportOfficerTheCoronerdealswithapproximately1200deathsayear.ThefilesfortheCoroneraresensitiveandmaycontaindistressinginformation.

1. TosupportHMCoronerintheorganisationofbusinessandday-to-dayoperations,includingtheschedulingandorganisationofinquests
2. TomanagethediaryofHMCoroner;organisingandarrangingappointmentsinliaisonwiththeCoroner,otherofficersandorganisationsasrequired
3. Todealwithallincomingcorrespondence,includingemailsandtelephonecalls,prioritisingandadvisingHMCoronerasappropriate
4. ToreplytoroutinecorrespondenceonbehalfofHMCoroner
5. ToprocesscasefilespriortoinquestandcreatecaseprofilesfortheCoroner
6. ToattendinquestsacrosstheCountyinsupportofHMCoroner
