Job Description
Our purpose is to bring together people, energy and markets to power and navigate a changing world. In a time of constant change and possibility we need new talent to pursue commercial opportunities, fuelled by world-class insight and expertise. We're always striving for more innovative digital solutions, sustainable outcomes and closer collaboration across our company and beyond, and you could be part of that too.
About the Role
This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic team at the forefront of oil and gas technology innovation. The successful candidate will play a key role in advancing the understanding of complex subsurface environments using modern geophysical methods and collaborative problem-solving. You will be supported by a diverse group of experts and have access to innovative tools and resources to help drive impactful results. The Geophysical Analysis Unit within bp's Imaging Technology Team aims to position bp as the global leader in reservoir characterization and subsurface uncertainty analysis by developing efficient, groundbreaking technologies and delivering advanced subsurface insight to support exploration, development, and production activities across bp's global portfolio. We develop and apply innovative geophysical imaging, analysis, and modelling techniques to solve complex subsurface challenges and help bp make better, safer, and more confident decisions.
As a Geophysical Analyst/Imaging Geophysicist, you will help to develop and deploy new algorithms and workflows to contribute to quantitative seismic interpretation, reservoir property prediction, and uncertainty analysis while collaborating closely with imaging specialists, petrophysicists, geologists, reservoir engineers and other technical experts. This role is ideal for someone with a creative and inquisitive nature who is passionate about geophysical analysis, quantitative interpretation, and developing innovative approaches to solve complex subsurface problems.
Key Accountabilities:
* Develop innovative approaches to quantitative seismic analysis and subsurface uncertainty characterisation.
* Design and deploy solutions across core geophysical workflows (well ties, seismic modelling, attribute analysis, inversion, etc.).
* Integrate seismic, geological, and petrophysical data to estimate subsurface properties and their associated uncertainties.
* Contribute to workflows and tools that embed geophysical insights into bp's broader subsurface evaluations.
* Explore the potential of ML/AI techniques to support subsurface characterisation challenges.
* Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver robust, high‑quality geophysical insights.
Essential Experience and Job Requirements:
* MSc or PhD in Geophysics, Earth Sciences, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or related field.
* Confirmed hands‑on geophysical experience in the energy industry.
* Strong background in seismic analysis, inversion, and reservoir property prediction (including AVO/AVA).
* Basic programming experience (e.g., Python, C/C++, MATLAB) and familiarity with code management tools such as Git.
* Exposure to machine learning, data analytics, or high‑performance computing environments.
* Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly to both specialist and non‑specialist audiences.
* Naturally curious, adaptable, and motivated to solve complex subsurface challenges.
