Senior Fellow in Trauma and Orthopaedics

Start date: October 2026. Contract type: Fixed term. Duration: 36 months. Purpose for Fixed Term: Training Contract – the post is appointed on a fixed‑term basis for the primary purpose of providing structured training and supervised clinical development. While the postholder will contribute to service delivery, the overarching purpose of the post is to provide defined educational opportunities, supervised clinical practice, and experience aligned to the relevant specialty training curriculum.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
* Regular Orthopaedic outpatient clinics at UHS Hospitals (1‑2 days per week). This will cover both elective and trauma.
* Trauma operating sessions at UHS Hospitals (1‑2 days per week).
* Elective operating sessions at UHS Hospitals.
* On‑call duties as part of the senior on‑call rota (usually Friday on‑call days and weekend nights).
* Supervise the treatment of patients in the Trust.
* Carry out regular ward rounds as appropriate (1‑2 per week).
* Admin and SPA time will be available, as well as study leave.
* Participation in clinical audit within the unit.
* Active involvement in the training and supervision of junior medical staff on ward rounds, in theatre and in clinics, including the teaching of medical and nursing students.
* Take responsibility for improving and complying with infection control practices.
Educational & Training Framework
The intended appointment is for a period of 3 years and is subject to a satisfactory annual review equivalent to the ARCP process. On completion, there will be an opportunity for an extra year as a senior speciality fellow.
At the end of the rotation it is expected that the individual will have completed the FRCS (T&O) and will be at specialty fellowship level. The training rotation will allow an individual to meet the minimum requirements for eligibility via the CESR route. Each post will last 6 months and will encompass the following specialties:
* Hip and Knee Surgery
* Hand Surgery
* Shoulder and Elbow Surgery
* Spine
* Paediatric Orthopaedics
* Foot and Ankle Surgery
Eligibility Criteria
* Minimum 6 years of specialty training.
* Hold relevant higher specialty exam (FRCP, FRCA, FRCS).
* A portfolio of evidence that demonstrates progress in accordance with the curriculum for the specialty.
* MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
* GMC registration with a licence to practise.
* Minimum 2 years registrar experience at registrar level in the UK.
* ATLS, MRCS, higher degree, FRCS (T&O) required.

* Evidence of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
* Competent to work without direct supervision where appropriate.

Salary
Depending on experience, £65,048 - £73,992 per annum.
