Peterborough City Council is seeking a confident, proactive, and organized Receptionist to join our Town Hall team. In this front-line role, you will be the first point of contact for visitors, staff, councillors, and contractors, ensuring every interaction is handled with professionalism, efficiency, and courtesy.
Main Responsibilities
As the first point of contact for visitors—including members of the public, contractors, staff, and councillors—you will deliver high-quality, accurate information about Council services and provide guidance on services offered by partner agencies when appropriate. You will direct customers to the correct departments, facilitate seamless access to services, and assist them in completing forms for engagement with the Council.
You will verify customer documentation to confirm eligibility for services, complying with data protection requirements. The role includes managing visitor and contractor bookings, issuing passes, and adhering to safety protocols. You will prepare and distribute ID badges and keys, manage the Reception mailbox, and respond promptly to queries.
Responsibilities also include overseeing fire evacuation procedures, ensuring health and safety standards are met, reporting incidents, issuing parking permits, and maintaining notice boards. You may operate from the reception counter or conduct floor-walking duties to meet customer needs. All advice and information provided must align with legislation, policies, and best practices. Maintaining accurate records and overseeing the meeting room booking system are also key duties.
You will support the Estates and Facilities Management team with data input and administrative tasks. Essential skills include excellent communication, a calm approach to conflict management, strong IT and organizational skills, and attention to detail. Experience in customer-facing roles, ideally within the public sector, is desirable. Flexibility to work at the reception or across the building is required, along with a positive attitude and commitment to excellent customer service.
