Job Overview
We are looking to recruit an outstanding, forward‑thinking and motivated consultant microbiologist to join our microbiology team delivering clinical microbiology and virology services. The post offers an excellent opportunity for an experienced clinician with a comprehensive understanding of microbiology to join a dynamic team committed to delivering the highest standard of care.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide a comprehensive, efficient, and cost‑effective clinical microbiology, virology, antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) and infection prevention & control service to the Trust and other users, including GPs and the UKHSA.
* Conduct report validation across all aspects of the microbiology service, ward and clinical liaison daily, including critical‑care liaison, and support the Speciality Doctor when required.
* Engage in daily liaison with BMS staff, Infection Prevention & Control staff, and other Consultant Microbiology staff; provide ICD cover when the usual ICD is on leave.
* Participate in the yearly job‑planning review.
* Lead and motivate the multidisciplinary team to deliver effective patient‑focused care and interventions.
* Support consultant colleagues and contribute to clinical governance and audit.
* Share responsibility with colleagues at The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust for a 24‑hour, 7‑day service with on‑call support.
* Contribute to antimicrobial stewardship and to undergraduate/postgraduate medical education where applicable.
* Comply with RCPath recommendations on appraisal and CPD.
Person Specification
* Qualifications
o Full GMC Registration with a current Licence to Practice.
o Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register/CCT or evidence of higher‑speciality training leading to a CCT or within 6 months of confirmed entry to the specialist register.
o FRCPath or equivalent.
* Experience
o Ability to work at consultant level in Clinical Microbiology.
o Expert opinion in Infection Control.
o Expert opinion in public health microbiology.
o Experience working in a multidisciplinary team.
* Skills
o Computer proficiency and internet usage.
o Adherence to laboratory protocols.
o Organisational skills.
* Knowledge
o Evidence of participation in CPD over the past 12 months where relevant.
* Additional
o Willingness to accept flexibility to meet the changing needs of the NHS.
o Effective communication and negotiation skills.
o Demonstrated leadership.
