Overview
Lead Clinical Pharmacist Renal and Urology role at NHS. The post holder will drive high-quality, patient-focused medicines optimisation across renal and urology wards, dialysis units and clinics, delivering outstanding patient-centred care.
Responsibilities
* Provide advanced clinical pharmacy leadership for renal and urology wards, dialysis units, and outpatient clinics.
* Lead a dedicated pharmacy team, ensuring continuity and excellence in service delivery.
* Develop, implement, and review evidence-based prescribing and formulary guidance.
* Optimise medicines safety and cost-effective prescribing practices, minimising adverse reactions and improving patient outcomes.
* Collaborate with multidisciplinary medical, nursing, and allied health teams to support effective patient flow and care.
* Manage the unit's drug budget; design and deliver medication-related cost improvement plans.
* Oversee medicines reconciliation, development of Patient Group Directions and Shared Care Guidelines.
* Guide safe transfer of prescribing and monitoring between secondary care and other settings.
* Support strategic service development in line with Trust, departmental, and ICS vision and plans.
Main duties
The post holder will carry out the full range of duties as the Lead Clinical Pharmacist - Renal and Urology to deliver patient-focused, quality care across the network in renal and urology wards, dialysis units, renal assessment units and outpatient clinics. The post holder will lead the clinical pharmacy service in Renal and Urology, providing responsible, safe and cost-effective prescribing. Key outcomes include:
* Optimise patient outcomes
* Minimise adverse reactions
The post also contributes to the broader Medicines Optimisation and Governance Strategy across the Trust, through leadership of clinical staff and publication/implementation of guidelines and procedures to promote best practice.
The post holder will support the Associate Director of Pharmacy, Deputy Head of Pharmacy & Clinical Services Manager and Pharmacists within the team to manage professional, clinical and technical input of pharmacy into the Renal and Urology directorate.

Job Description and Person Specification
Essential qualifications and experience include:
* MPharm or equivalent
* Registered as a pharmacist with the GPhC
* Post Graduate Pharmacy Qualification or equivalent experience (minimum Post graduate Diploma level)
* Independent Prescribing Qualification or willing to undergo training to become an IP
Desirable qualifications include management qualification or equivalent experience.
Essential knowledge and skills include:
* Extensive post-registration hospital experience
* Experience in multidisciplinary teamwork and delivering quality improvement, CPD and staff development
* Experience leading and supervising research, quality improvement or audits
* Budget management and service development experience
* Clinical governance and risk management knowledge; stock control and SOP adherence
* Knowledge of medicines management, prescribing at interfaces, and NHS PbR/commissioning guidance
* Understanding of renal and urology patient care across primary/secondary care interfaces
* Strong communication, interpersonal, IT and analytical skills

* DBS Enhanced check required for patient-facing work
