1 x Role Monday to Friday 7am until 3pm/3.30pm 2 x Roles @ 6am to 2pm (37 hours per week) Need standard Driving licence Service purpose: To carry out the instructions of the StreetScene Area Manager with minimal supervision, either as a member of a team, or individually, to deliver StreetScene Services against the following purposes for the people of East Devon using available resources, doing what is required, when it is required, to meet demand and achieve service standards: 1) Maintain and keep safe the environment for our customers 2) Give customers advice about their environment Job purpose: To carry out the scheduled mechanical sweeping of towns and villages throughout East Devon with minimal supervision, either as a member of a team or individually. An element of flexibility is required to cover mechanical breakdowns and servicing with the need to work overtime to achieve the scheduled work. Core accountabilities: 1. Drive a mechanical road sweeper around the district, sweeping the road channels on a scheduled basis. 2. Use mechanical plant, equipment and vehicles; assist teams throughout the district as directed, achieving Streetscene’s standards and objectives. 3. Carry out basic maintenance of the mechanical sweeper plant/vehicle to maintain roadworthiness (cleaning, oil, water lubrication of bearings to the maintenance schedule). 4. Sweeping and use of a blower to clear paths and gutters not accessible by the sweeper vehicle of grit, debris and litter. 5. During periods of vehicle servicing/breakdowns assist other Streetscene staff in cleansing and grounds maintenance activities: a. Travelling around the area in a vehicle collecting debris and litter b. Sweeping the footpaths and channels as necessary c. Cleaning the public lavatories and other public buildings as instructed d. Clearing the beaches of litter and detritus e. Grass cutting and strimming f. Hedge pruning g. Digging, bedding and planting h. Hoeing and weeding i. Watering 6. Make sure that StreetScene Operations Team offers a customer focused service using systems thinking principles. 7. Support the Council’s approach to equalities and diversity ensuring that our services and policies identify, address and promote the needs of our diverse community. This includes the need for safety of children and other vulnerable people. 8. Take personal responsibility for the relevant aspects of the Council’s Health and Safety Policy. 9. Ensure awareness and compliance with the Council’s policies, Code of Conduct and Constitution. 10. Evaluate and assist in managing risk within the service. Requirements General Education - Knowledge of local area / Accuracy and attention to detail particularly when working to tight deadlines Ability to work on own initiative as well as part of a team Able to deal with challenging behaviour from members of the public effectively/professionally Able to communicate relevant information regularly and effectively You are open to new ideas and suggestions and speak up when you see a better way You work safely to maintain the health of yourself and others You share skills and knowledge, and encourage and support others You respect colleagues, partners, members and customers and treat people according to their needs Driving a mechanical roadsweeper or left hand drive vehicle Evidence of practical experience in using mechanical plant and equipment Evidence of practical experience in grounds maintenance and/or Public realm cleansing Ability to drive up to 7.5 tonne vehicles A valid C1 driving licence (or equivalent such as a B licence issued prior to Jan 1997) is essential
