Job overview

The post holder will be expected to play a pivotal role in the Acute Oncology Service at Epsom and St Helier NHS Trust and the GI service at The RMH for all patients. The post holder will be required to participate in the RMH out-of-hours medical oncology consultant on-call rota. The successful candidate will have access to mentoring within the GI team and in other areas as needed.

Office space and secretarial support will be provided in the Sutton branch of The Royal Marsden. Resident doctors also support the clinical and research activities of the GI team. The AOS postholders work closely together and are required to coordinate leave to provide continuity of service. Clinical roles and educational leadership will be shared, although the post holders may wish to take leadership in one area. Tumour specific commitments will be conducted in the GI unit.

The post holder will be employed by The Royal Marsden Hospital. The job planning process will be carried out in partnership with the employer and employee. The post holder will report to the Clinical Lead for Acute Oncology and The Head of the GI Unit and be managed within the Division of Cancer Services.


Main duties of the job

This post holder will support the AOS service at Epsom and St Helier NHS Trust providing:

- Management of acutely unwell medical patients
- Management of patients in the Clinical Assessment Unit
- Leadership on the co-ordination and integration of patient care with surrounding Trusts who may be caring for our patients on both an emergency and elective basis.
- Telephone support to The Royal Marsden Macmillan Hotline
- Development for the way the Trust provides inpatient management for long stay medical patients.
- A key role in resident doctor educational development and leadership

Person specification


Status

* Eligible for full GMC Registration and licence to practice
* Membership of the Royal College of Physicians or equivalent qualifications
* CCT in Medical Oncology or equivalent or within 6 months’ of obtaining it
* Higher Degree (PhD/MD)


Experience

* Broad based experience in oncology, including systemic therapies
* Significant experience in clinical and translational research
* Significant interest and experience in the management of acute oncology patients
* Undergraduate and postgraduate training experience
* Management and leadership

Flu Vaccination – What We Expect of our Staff

At The Royal Marsden we have an immune compromised patient population who we must protect as much as we can against the flu virus. Each year, seasonal flu affects thousands of people in the UK. Occurring mainly in winter, it is an infectious respiratory disease capable of producing symptoms ranging from those similar to a common cold, through to very severe or even fatal disease.

The wellbeing of our staff and patients is of the upmost importance to us, and it is the expectation of The Royal Marsden that all patient-facing staff have an annual flu vaccination, provided free of charge by the Trust.
