Job overview

The gesh Director of Midwifery (GDoM) role is the most senior midwife across the Group and reports directly to the Group Chief Nursing Officer (GNCO) and will be their nominated Deputy for midwifery related matters They will provide professional midwifery advice to the Group Board of Executives, GCNO, Hospital Leadership teams and are accountable for the quality standards within maternity alongside the (GNCO) and site Chief Nursing Officers, ensuring that the corporate nursing responsibility for women and new born is discharged and that highquality,flexible,responsive,compassionateandsafe care is provided and that regulatory requirements are met.

Main duties of the job

The post holder, as professional midwifery lead on the following, will advise the GCNO and Chief Executive (CEO), Hospital Executive teams and the Trust Board on all Midwifery aspects including:

· Maternity vision and strategy – Quality Improvement and Transformational plans

· HR, workforce, equality, training and development

· Quality, safety and governance

· Patient experience – collaboration with Maternity Voices Partnership

· Midwifery and professional standards

· CQC regulation and compliance

· Adherence to national guidance

The post holder willwork in collaborationwith key stakeholders to ensure the delivery of key safety, quality, performance, and governance plans,demonstratinghighlydevelopedleadershipandmanagerialskills.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical and Professional Leadership

· The post holder will be expected to demonstrate a highly visible, authoritative, compassionate and transformational leadership style.

· Ensure visibility of the role in the clinical areas through a programme of patient safety walk arounds and engagement with frontline staff, enabling review of quality indicators and performance in partnership with the respective site leadership teams.

· Provide expert clinical advice, interpretation of national policy and will work with associated agencies such as the Local Maternity and Neonatal Services (LMNS) in the Integrated Care system to deliver and assure policy.

· Lead aspects ofclinical integrationand clinical, financial and workforcegovernance in line with theTrustStrategy

· Establish effective, professional multidisciplinary relationships both within the Trust and with external partners.

· Maintain an up-to-date understanding of developments and changes in legislation, national policy and guidance that relate to all aspects of midwifery practice and ensure that senior Trust management are updated and informed of impact on Trust services.

· To lead on enhancing excellent culture and close working relationships between with multi-professional staff across the Group

· Support the GCNO to develop, implement and measure the impact of the Midwifery Strategy

· Provide strong and effective midwifery input into the development and implementation of the Trusts strategic direction and goals.

· Be responsible for midwifery workforce planning, ensuring the effective recruitment, retention and development of midwives and support staff working within maternity which will positively affect the Trust’s delivery of the maternity service and future plans.

· Lead and arbitrate, if necessary, on the development of the skills of the midwifery and support staff to ensure the level and distribution of competency necessary to meet with Trust’s needs and expectations and be the final arbiter.


Person specification


Experience

* Significant current/recent management/leadership experience as a Head of Midwifery/Senior Midwifery manager level within an acute NHS provider Trust or equivalent complex health care provider managing a number of services/department as part of a multidisciplinary management team.
* Significant Head of Midwifery experience and leading clinical teams and professional agenda
* Experience of taking action based on own interpretation of broad clinical and professional polices, ability to advise Divisional and Site Management teams on how these should be implemented with specific focus on Maternity services
* Evidence of leading the local implementation of Trust wide professional midwifery objectives
* Evidence of leading changes within MDTs which have led to improved productivity/quality and safety of patient experience
* Experience on call operational manager for a service or the organisation which has Type 1 Emergency Department/Maternity Delivery Suite.
* • A knowledge of health and social care structures ay national, regional and local level.


Qualifications

* NMC Registered Midwife
* Degree in Nursing or Health Related Subject
* Masters in a Health Related Subject or equivalent demonstrable experience supplements by specialist training, experience or short courses to doctorate level of equivalent
* Evidence of recent (last 2 years) continuing professional development relevant to post
* Post graduate Leadership/Management qualification training/development course (completed or on programme currently)
* Registered Nurse
* Professional Midwifery/Nursing Advocate


Skills

* Able to demonstrate effective leadership style, able to build confidence/motivate staff including the ability to encourage self-initiative, good practice and completion of projects within team environments
* Advanced decision-making skills with the ability to think, plan and deliver strategically
* Ability to analyse complex clinical issues/problems, identify necessary actions and make recommendations in order to follow these through
* Ability to think and plan strategically, tactically and creatively to prioritise work programmes in the face of competing demands
* Ability to write reports in short, changing timescales whilst subject to frequent interruptions requiring immediate responses
* Demonstrate sound judgement in the absence of clear guidelines or precedent, seeking advice as necessary from more senior management when appropriate
* Ability to inform national policy and guidance to inform decision making.
* Recognised qualification in leading change
