Overview
Waterway Operative role at Scottish Canals, Grangemouth. Join our Lowland Canals Operations team to help ensure the safe daily operation and maintenance of the waterway and waterside, delivering a safe, secure and vibrant experience for visitors and local communities.
The role is permanent, with a starting salary of £26,110 (Band B) plus Variable Hours allowances of 11.25% and Outdoor Working payment of £850 per annum. Hours are 35 per week on a rota of 5 days on and 3 off, including weekends or as required by business needs. Closing date: 07/09/2025. Location: Grangemouth. Department: Operations.

Primary Responsibilities Of The Role
* Comply with Scottish Canals Health & Safety policies and defined standards. Report incidents, accidents and near misses. Support and contribute to behavioural safety.
* Maintain accurate records such as timesheets and HAVs records.
* Complete point of work risk assessments and adjust work methods as needed. Ensure equipment (PPE, plant, materials) is appropriate for the task.
* Provide outstanding customer service to maximise the customer experience.
* Promote the organisation professionally and uphold SC standards at all times.
* Operate structures such as locks, bridges and sluices safely and efficiently.
* Undertake daily operation and maintenance tasks on the waterway and waterside (e.g., towpath vegetation management, painting).
* Operate appropriate plant and tools, ensuring competencies are met.
* Provide first response for emergencies/incidents on the waterway.
* Support asset inspections; identify and report structure failures, breaches, damage or pollution to a supervisor or engineers.
* Participate in the weekly standby rota and attend to call-outs as directed.
* Consider environmental and heritage issues in all work.
* When working at Sea Locks, handle cash, complete SIPS forms, licence documentation and cash transfer documents.
* Work outdoors in all weathers.
Examples Of Work
* Operate mowers, strimmers, chainsaws and other ground care equipment for routine vegetation management.
* Use hand and power tools to carry out minor maintenance works as directed.
* Assist in routine maintenance of equipment, including pre- and post-use checks.
* Support other team members in maintenance, construction and repair of SC areas and facilities (e.g., pontoon and jetty repairs, decorating, small repairs).
* Maintain accurate records and operate IT systems as required.
* Perform manual tasks with proper lifting techniques as per POWRA.
Qualifications And Knowledge Required
* Relevant valid competency for use of plant/tools to maintain the SC estate.
* Accident/Incident & Near Miss Reporting competency.
* Valid driving licence appropriate for the vehicle to be driven.
* Evidence of certification on operating plant and equipment.
Skills And Experience Required
* Experience in customer service, gardening/landscaping/vegetation management and asset management.
* Basic DIY and maintenance skills.
* Ability to communicate effectively with team members and locations for efficient operation.
* Basic literacy and numeracy skills.
* Computer and mobile phone skills.

* Judgement for safety and appropriate use of equipment and resources per SC standards.
* Use of initiative to maintain high levels of customer service; escalate issues as needed.

* Deal with inquiries from first-line customers professionally and provide guidance.
* Liaise with third parties such as contractors and volunteers.
