Overview
This is a senior clinical post. The postholder will work autonomously in the department adhering to Trust protocols and policies, NBSS and NICE guidelines, taking a lead role as part of the multi-disciplinary team. The postholder will also be involved with, and where appropriate collaborate in national and international research contributing to relevant networks and forums, with the aim of supporting excellence within the specialist field.
Responsibilities
* Undertake all radiological and specialised imaging procedures within their area of expertise, including image interpretation, clinical breast examination, breast ultrasound, image-guided biopsies and advanced client communications; make clear and accurate clinical decisions in the best interest of the patient.
* Adhere to the Health and Care Professions Council and the Society of Radiographers Code of Professional Conduct; actively participate in clinical supervision, peer review, and the implementation of research aligned to NHS England\'s Chief Allied Health Professions Officers Research Strategy for England.
* Provide leadership, facilitate education support, and offer advice to all staff within and external to breast imaging for Gloucestershire Breast Screening service and symptomatic breast service.
* Demonstrate a commitment to advanced practice with a minimum of 50% of the portfolio spent in direct autonomous clinical practice and leadership within this clinical area.
* Collaborate on national and international research as appropriate to support excellence in the specialist field.
* Additional contract details: during training, pay is Band 7; on completion of training the role will be Band 8A.
Working for our organisation
Thirlestaine Breast Centre provides the breast screening service for the population of Gloucestershire. The target population is 110,000 women aged 50-70 years, with expected growth of 10–15% over the next decade. The centre operates four digital mammography units (three with stereotactic capability, all with tomosynthesis capability; one also has contrast-enhanced mammography), three ultrasound units (replaced in 2021), and two mobile units for screening at other sites in Gloucestershire. The team includes one breast clinician, five consultant radiologists, a clinical imaging specialist radiographer, specialist radiographers, nurses, and office staff. Role extension is promoted with Advanced and Enhanced Practice Radiographers performing screen reading and image-guided breast biopsy. Co-location of imaging and surgical clinics supports strong collaboration for both screening and symptomatic breast services, with six consultant breast surgeons and daily one-stop new patient clinics. Approximately 5,000 new cases per year are seen, with about 8,000 surveillance mammograms and over 300 symptomatic breast MRIs annually.
