Contract Type: Contractor / Independent
About UKAS
UKAS is the UK’s National Accreditation Body, responsible for assessing organisations that provide conformity assessment services. Our mission is to ensure that accredited bodies operate to the highest standards of impartiality, competence, and reliability.
The Role
We are seeking experienced professionals from the oil and gas sector to join our network of Independent Technical Assessors. As a UKAS Assessor, you will focus on evaluating the conformity assessment activities of certification bodies working in upstream petroleum extraction and related support services.
Your primary responsibility will be to assess whether certification bodies are correctly applying accreditation standards, particularly ISO 9001 and ISO 17021—within the context of oil and gas operations. This is a role centered on conformity assessment, not regulatory compliance.
What You’ll Be Doing:
* Conduct technical assessments of certification bodies in the oil and gas sector, focusing on their conformity assessment processes
* Evaluate the competence of auditors and the effectiveness of audit methodologies
* Review sampling strategies and technical decision-making for relevance and accuracy
* Ensure correct and consistent application of ISO 9001 within petroleum extraction and upstream operations
* Prepare clear, impartial assessment reports and recommendations
* Uphold UKAS standards of impartiality and integrity throughout all assessments
What We’re Looking For:
* Substantial direct industrial experience in oil and gas extraction or support services
* Strong working knowledge of ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems in oil and gas operations
* Familiarity with audit principles (impartiality, audit trails, sampling, reporting)
* Understanding of petroleum extraction processes, technologies, and regulatory frameworks
* Understanding of processes, technologies, and regulations related to oil and gas extraction (crude petroleum and natural gas) and support activities for these operations
* Excellent communication, analytical, and report writing skills
* Willingness to travel within the UK and internationally as required
* Membership in a relevant professional body (e.g., Energy Institute, Society of Petroleum Engineers) is desirable
Typical Backgrounds:
* Drilling Superintendents
* Offshore Installation Managers (OIMs)
* Petroleum Engineers
* Production Operations Managers
* QA/QC or HSE Managers in oilfield operations
* Technical Advisors or Consultants in upstream services
