About the Role
National Grid is hiring a CNI Infrastructure Engineer for our CNI Operations team. The role is based at our Warwick office, with hybrid working (one day per week on site). You will play a key role in designing, developing and supporting secure, scalable infrastructure platforms that underpin critical operations across our enterprise.
What You'll Do
* Take ownership of our core server estate, managing and optimising physical and virtual servers, including cutting‑edge hypervisors such as VMware VCF and ESXi.
* Automate infrastructure with Terraform and Ansible to build, deploy and manage platforms at scale.
* Administer enterprise‑grade storage solutions (SAN/NAS, object storage) and enhance reliability with technology such as Veeam.
* Engineer high‑performing, resilient networks, configuring and fine‑tuning LAN/WAN, SD‑WAN, VLANs, BGP/OSPF, VPNs, load balancers, firewalls, and more.
* Deliver proactive monitoring, rapid troubleshooting, performance optimisation and capacity planning to maintain platform reliability.
* Respond to incidents, conduct root‑cause analyses and support 24/7 on‑call environments.
* Create automation tools and workflows that eliminate repetitive tasks and empower teams.
* Implement robust security controls across patching, vulnerability management, hardening, zero‑trust, IAM and network segmentation.
* Collaborate with SRE, security, application and architecture teams to deliver new services, large‑scale changes and complex migrations.
* Contribute to disaster‑recovery strategy, run test exercises and design high‑availability architectures.
About You
* Deep understanding of enterprise IT infrastructure – compute, storage, backups, networks, operating systems (Windows/Linux) and middleware.
* Strong knowledge of Active Directory Domain Services and ability to design, manage, troubleshoot directory‑based environments.
* Hands‑on virtualisation expertise with VMware vSphere and VCF.
* Proficient with networking fundamentals – TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, routing, switching and firewalls.
* Experience with infrastructure‑as‑code tooling such as Terraform and Ansible.
* Script knowledge in PowerShell, Bash or Python – eager to automate wherever possible.
* Familiarity with backup & disaster‑recovery strategies, high‑availability designs and business continuity principles.
* Knowledge of modern storage solutions such as vSAN, NAS and object storage platforms.
* Track record of solving complex, multi‑layered technical issues across several technologies.
* Excellent communication skills, translating complex technical concepts into clear, understandable language for non‑technical stakeholders.

Additional Information
* Full‑time, permanent role.
* Role requires National Security Vetting (NSV) checks.
* Hybrid/flexible working – travel to the office as per business need, approximately one day per week; base location: NG House, Warwick.
