Overview
The Head of Legal and Excellence plays a pivotal role in driving a culture of excellence and robust governance across all MLS products and services. As a key member of the business senior leadership team, this senior role blends strategic and operational leadership with specialist legal expertise supporting on legal decisions regarding Clinical Negligence case acceptance and progression within the business. Location: Liverpool (Hybrid).

Location and Hours
Location: Liverpool (Hybrid). Hours: 35 hours per week, Mon-Fri, 9am to 5pm.

Key Responsibilities
* Legal Leadership and Team Management
* Lead and manage the operational performance and development of the case vetting, Education and legal support teams
* Ensure accurate, consistent and timely vetting decisions as well as high quality legal input and case progression support
* Develop and implement the organisation’s Excellence and Standards strategy aligned with MLS objectives
* Champion a culture of accountability, quality, and high performance across all business functions
* Lead, manage, and develop the teams to ensure safe, effective, and consistent practice
* Provide clear direction, performance oversight, and professional supervision
* Establish and monitor standards aligned with organisational policies and regulatory requirements in collaboration with HoD Compliance
* Ensure timely and accurate processing of referrals/leads in line with service level agreements
* Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance service quality and outcomes
* Establish performance standards and KPIs
* Work with the HoD Operations to drive continuous improvement methodologies and organisational learning
* Ensure consistent service standards across all departments
Leadership and Stakeholder Management
* Serve as a trusted advisor and strategic partner to the Managing Director, offering expert guidance on departmental performance, operational excellence, and targeted improvement initiatives
* Lead and develop a high-performing Excellence and Standards team
* Influence senior stakeholders and cross-functional leaders to achieve compliance and quality objectives
* Act as a key liaison with group partners
* Foster collaborative relationships across departments to embed standards and best practice
Person Specification
Essential Experience
* Significant experience in leadership or team management
* Medico-legal experience
* Experience working within governance, compliance, or regulatory frameworks
* Demonstrable experience providing guidance on legal or professional standards in healthcare
Essential Knowledge
* In-depth understanding of relevant legislation and regulatory frameworks
* Understanding of policy development, internal controls, and assurance frameworks
Skills And Competencies
* Strategic thinker with strong analytical capability
* Excellent leadership and people management skills
* Ability to interpret complex legal and regulatory information and translate it into practical guidance
* Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal
* High levels of integrity, judgement, and professional credibility
