THE ROLE:
The Laboratory Supervisor's role is to coordinate and maintain laboratory resources, including equipment and personnel, to ensure that analytical laboratory activities meet the requirements of company policies, the Integrated Management System for QHSE, production operations, applicable testing standards and customer requirements.
Operational Management:
Managing daily laboratory operations; acting as the point of contact for Analytical Laboratory enquiries from the SMACC melt shop Operations teams, Technical department, suppliers and other stakeholders.
Quality Assurance:
Implementing and monitoring procedures to ensure the precision, accuracy and reliability of analysis results and maintained compliance with ISO-9001 and other applicable standards and stakeholder requirements e.g. customer specifications. Investigating process deviations, non-conforming process outputs, and implementing corrective and preventive actions. Maintaining laboratory - specific data in the Management of Information System.
Equipment & Inventory Maintenance:
Ensuring equipment is calibrated, maintained, and repaired. Managing inventory by ordering consumables via SAP and tracking stock levels. Job Owner for contractor / supplier maintenance activities within the laboratory, implementing the site Permit To Work procedure. Maintaining servicing / call-out agreements and break-down response in liaison with Suppliers.
Team Leadership & Development:
Recruiting, training, mentoring, and supervising the laboratory team, monitoring performance, managing the shift rotas and staff rotation, and handling disciplinary matters in liaison with the HR department. Ensuring that laboratory staff competence requirements are defined and documented for all lab activities, including maintained records of staff qualification / maintained proficiency and completed on job training.
Health & Safety:
Maintaining, updating, and enforcing safe working procedures, carrying out Risk Assessments / COSHH / PUWER assessments of activities, materials and equipment at the laboratory.
Documentation & Reporting:
Standard Operating Procedures, Corrective Action Reports, incident investigation reports, laboratory performance summaries.
Key Linkages and Interfaces
Internal: Raw Materials, Operations, Procurement, QHSE management teams.
External: Providers of laboratory analysis, suppliers of laboratory equipment and consumables.
Decision Powers
Decides on: Equipment verification, Safe working procedures & permits, Consumable procurement
Influences on: Equipment Capital Expenditure, Corrective / preventative actions arising from investigation of nonconformances
Key Performance Indicators
In-process sample turnaround times, precision and accuracy
Maintained compliance with IMS certification, site policies and applicable regulations
Incident investigation, root cause analysis and corrective action completion
Working hours: The role is 40 hours a week, business hours are Monday to Friday 8am-5pm however the Lab operates 6am-6pm. Some flexibility required on occasions.
THE CANDIDATE
Experience:
Managerial experience in an analytical laboratory or shift-based production setting.
Implementation and verification of new equipment / methods / suppliers / procedures
Practical experience with safety protocols & procedures e.g. contractor management
Technical Knowledge:
Familiarity with chemical analysis laboratory methods e.g. combustion, optical emission spectroscopy, x-ray fluorescence
Awareness of stainless-steel grade chemical specifications, and
their testing standards
Awareness of Quality, Health, Safety, and Environment management system requirements
Skills:
Leadership & Teamwork: Able to lead, motivate, and manage a diverse team.
Organisational & Time Management: Exceptional organisational skills to ensure continued laboratory operations and maintained equipment availability.
Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Problem-Solving: Root cause analysis and corrective action implementation / fix and verify, for equipment / procedural failures
Computer Literacy: Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)
Qualifications:
Degree / HNC / equivalent in a relevant materials / science / engineering subject
Continuous improvement / quality management certification would be beneficial.
