We’re looking for a someone to lead, develop and grow the team over the coming years ensuring that it’s a great success. Working closely with colleagues in other disciplines you'll prioritise the potential tasks, lead, scope and plan the work and on occasion have a hands-on role. Your leadership will develop a team that is all about world class quality. The team is tasked with high quality joinery and carpentry skills to look after some of the National Trust’s most precious buildings.

What it's like to work here

You’ll report to the Building Skills Craft Manager and be supported by other specialist consultants to prioritise and organise work. Your time will be split between supervision, planning and organising work with some hands-on, as required.

You’ll be part of the Trust’s internal consultancy: a flexible resource of specialist skills and expertise. As one of a multidisciplinary team of experts, including curators, fundraisers, building surveyors and project managers, you’ll be working with others to help make things happen.

Your contractual place of work will be the National Trust office at Park Farm West Wycombe. and there will be site visits and meetings at other National Trust places. We’ll talk about this in more detail at interview.

What you'll be doing

You’ll plan and supervise all aspects of building operations in both the workshop and on-site to a consistently high standard. You’ll be responsible for managing risk and compliance and take a pro-active approach to all aspects of risk management of buildings and structures. You'll ensure risk assessments are undertaken in line with legislative requirements and Trust guidance and that workshops, stores, vehicles and equipment are safe and comply with appropriate regulations.

You'll complete and maintain records and paperwork accurately in accordance with National Trust policies and processes. Produce accurate tenders and specifications for the works required, obtain competitive material costs. You'll produce material cutting lists and place orders for all materials. Carry out all records and costing to provide an accurate summary of costs. You'll ensure cost effective use of financial resources and ideally be able to carry out joinery to the highest professional standard to support the team, as required.

You'll assist Building Surveyors in the formulation of annual repairs and maintenance requirements for properties and organising/monitoring routine maintenance tasks identified in this process.

You'll manage and supervise a team of craftspeople including apprentices and will play an active role in their training and development.

Who we're looking for

7. Effective communication and collaboration skills

Criteria for all other candidates:

8. Experience in managing and supervising teams of crafts and building professionals, enhancing skills and facilitating the transfer of knowledge and understanding
9. Skilled in the delivery of specialist conservation and repair work
10. Understanding of planning and execution of maintenance programmes
11. Knowledge of risk management and compliance
12. Budget and resource management ability
13. Working knowledge of record keeping and information management
14. Effective communication and collaboration skills, including contractor management supervision in the building industry
