Head Equipment, Dosimetry and Imaging - Higher Principal Physicist

The closing date is 11 February 2026

Are you an experienced senior Clinical Scientist seeking a strategic leadership role within a forward‑thinking Radiotherapy Physics service?

Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, part of the Humber Health Partnership, is seeking to appoint an outstanding Higher Principal Physicist (Band 8B) to lead the Radiotherapy Equipment, Dosimetry and Imaging sections.

This senior role provides professional, scientific and operational leadership across a modern radiotherapy department serving a population of around 1 million.

The department operates six Varian linear accelerators (two Halcyon and four TrueBeam) with Eclipse treatment planning and Surface Guided Radiotherapy, alongside two Siemens CT scanners, an Xstrahl superficial unit, a Flexitron brachytherapy afterloader and a Papillon contact radiotherapy system. The service was the first in the UK to achieve UKAS accreditation to the BS70000 MPACE standard and maintains ISO9001 accreditation.

The postholder will lead equipment lifecycle management, treatment planning, dosimetry and radiotherapy imaging, working closely with the Radiotherapy Physics senior leadership team, clinical oncologists and radiographers. You will play a central role in service development and innovation, supporting advanced techniques including adaptive RT and MRI, and in developing the future workforce through training and mentorship.

Main duties of the job

As a senior member of the Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering Division, you will:

* Provide advanced scientific and professional leadership in Radiotherapy Physics, ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality and effective clinical services.
* Act as a Medical Physics Expert in accordance with IR(ME)R, providing authoritative advice and governance oversight to support regulatory compliance and patient safety.
* Lead on service development, commissioning, quality assurance and the clinical implementation of new and emerging radiotherapy technologies.
* Contribute to strategic planning, research and innovation, and the education, training and professional development of the multidisciplinary workforce.
* Deputise for the Head of Radiotherapy Physics as required, providing senior leadership across the Radiotherapy service.

This role offers the opportunity to shape the introduction of advanced radiotherapy techniques, lead major equipment and digital transformation programmes, and represent the Trust within regional and national professional networks.
