Description and Requirements

This role is open for the Edinburgh, Scotland location only. Candidates must be based there, as the position requires working from the office at least three days per week (3:2 hybrid policy).

Lenovo is seeking a talented and motivated Data Engineer/Scientist to join our growing team. This role is critical to the success of our machine learning initiatives, focusing on the creation, quality control, and governance of the datasets that power our models. You will bridge the gap between raw data and model readiness, working closely with model developers to understand their needs and deliver high‑quality, reliable data. This is a hands‑on role requiring strong technical skills in data engineering, data analysis, and machine learning fundamentals. Responsibilities

* Data Creation & Annotation: Design, build, and implement processes for creating task‑specific training datasets, including data labeling, annotation, and augmentation techniques.
* Data Pipeline Development: Accelerate dataset creation and improvement using scripting, automation, and data labeling platforms.
* Data Quality & Evaluation: Perform thorough data analysis to assess quality, identify anomalies, and ensure data integrity, using ML tools to evaluate performance.
* Big Data Technologies: Process, transform, and store large datasets with SQL, NoSQL, Spark, Hadoop, and cloud warehouses like Snowflake, Redshift, and BigQuery.
* Data Governance & Lineage: Maintain data governance best practices, tracking lineage, documenting source tracking, and managing licenses while ensuring privacy compliance.
* Collaboration with Model Developers: Work closely with ML engineers and data scientists to understand requirements, provide clean datasets, and iterate based on feedback.
* Documentation: Create concise documentation for pipelines, quality checks, and governance procedures.
* Stay Current: Keep up‑to‑date with advancements in data engineering, ML, and governance.


Qualifications

* Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s in Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics, or related field.
* Experience: 8+ years in data engineering or data science.
* Programming Skills: Proficiency in Python and SQL; Java/Scala experience a plus.
* Database Skills: Strong relational (PostgreSQL, MySQL) and NoSQL (MongoDB, Cassandra) experience.
* Big Data Tools: Spark, Hadoop, or cloud warehouses (Snowflake, Redshift, BigQuery).
* Data Manipulation: Pandas, NumPy, and other processing libraries.
* ML Fundamentals: Data preprocessing, feature engineering, and model evaluation.
* Data Governance: Lineage, quality, and security principles.
* Communication: Excellent written and verbal skills; ability to explain complex concepts.
* Problem Solving: Strong analytical and analytical skills.


Bonus Points

* Experience with data labeling platforms (Labelbox, Scale AI, Amazon SageMaker Ground Truth).
* MLOps practices and tools (Kubeflow, MLflow).
* Cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP).
* Data visualization tools (Tableau, Power BI).
* Orchestration tools (Airflow, Prefect).
