We are seeking an engineering manager to manage the wafer-fab process integration engineering team in Lumentum’s Northamptonshire InP wafer fabrication facility. The individual and team role is to develop new and improved processes for fabrication of III-V-semiconductor wafers for InP optical components, and integrating these steps into full wafer process flows.

The role is within the chip R&D department, and is responsible for introduction into production of new lasers, particularly lasers for Cloud/AI applications, and also some photonic integrated circuits (PICs) for coherent telecommunications systems.

This will require collaborative working with staff from a wide range of engineering backgrounds with many different skills to solve challenging problems with real commercial impact, across R&D and manufacturing operations departments.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. The ability to manage and drive a team performing the following functions:Development of new InP wafer fab processes required for laser chips.Process integration of new process steps into the complete wafer process flow.Development of wafer processes for complex photonic integrated circuitsImprovements on existing wafer fab processes for production components .Integration of new wafer fab processes with existing process steps.Creation of process flows using MES systems.Transfer into manufacture of new process steps and new chips.Wafer process optimisations for improved yield, cost or cycle time.“8D” investigations of yield improvements by process flow changes.Use of manufacturability statistical evidence.
2. Identify future process module requirements to enable next generation device manufacture
3. Maintain awareness of future trends in InP processing.
4. Develop and plan wafer process projects with R&D and operations teams .
5. Present plans and progress to executives,
6. Execute activities rapidly in parallel with fast rapidly ramping volumes, managing the complexity of improvements and meeting customer orders in parallel.
7. Work closely with other Lumentum fabs to duplicate manufacturing lines for increased demand.
8. Transfer of existing wafer processes to larger wafer sizes.
9. Assist in recommending new wafer process tools.

The candidate will work closely with:

- Engineering leads and design primes in the chip R&D/NPI department.
- Wafer fab manufacturing operations.

- Wafer fab manufacturing sustaining process engineers.

- Global staff in similar roles in other Lumentum wafer fabrication facilities.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

10. Degree in physics, electrical/electronic engineering, materials science or a related discipline, with a broad engineering background.

EXPERIENCE:

11. In-depth knowledge of III-V wafer processing techniques
12. Experience in a broad range of semiconductor wafer processing, including but not restricted to several of the following: lithography, dry etching, wet etching, dielectrics/metal deposition patterning, implant, diffusion, gratings.
13. Process integration of existing and new wafer processes for manufacture of new designs on new wafer platforms.
14. Knowledge of important aspects of semiconductor materials.
15. Proven ability to execute complex engineering activities.
16. Project co-ordination between R&D and manufacturing teams.
17. Previous experience in this or related industries (optoelectronics, semiconductor technology, solid state physics, electronics or telecommunications) is not essential
18. Demonstrated ability to manage a team performing the functions described above.
