Shift Technician (Mechanical and Electrical)
Location: Port of Tilbury, Port of Tilbury London Ltd, Leslie Ford House
Hours: 42‑hour shift pattern – 4 on 4 off (2 days/2 nights), includes weekends
Compensation: £53,745 + Shift Allowance £13,437
About the Role
We are looking for two Shift Technicians to join the LCTE Engineering team at the Port of Tilbury – one mechanical and one electrical. In this role you will be part of a dedicated engineering team that carries out planned and reactive maintenance on terminal equipment, including fault diagnosis, repairs, and providing technical support to operational plant. You will work on height‑related tasks, use approved access equipment and fall‑protection systems, and follow permit‑to‑work procedures and safety regulations. Your focus will be on ensuring safety, maintaining equipment performance, and minimising downtime.
Key Responsibilities
* Maintain and repair container cranes, straddle carriers, and other terminal equipment across mechanical and electrical disciplines.
* Respond promptly to equipment breakdowns to minimise downtime and operational disruption.
* Complete all maintenance work safely and to a high standard, supporting equipment reliability.
* Record maintenance activities, inspections, fault findings, and repairs accurately using designated reporting software.
* Communicate effectively with Shift Supervisors and Engineering Management about equipment condition, faults, and progress.
* Support equipment reliability through fault investigation, statutory inspections, safety checks, and documentation.
* Safely operate and inspect engineering plant and equipment, including MEWPs, cranes, FLTs, and plant vehicles.
* Maintain housekeeping, lubrication, and cleanliness of workshops and equipment.
* Take responsibility for personal and others’ health and safety, complying with all terminal policies.
* Work effectively as part of a team, collaborating with Operations, Engineering, and Technical Specialists.
* Demonstrate flexibility to work shifts and overtime as required.
* Carry out additional duties as reasonably assigned by the Line Manager.
Essential Qualifications
* ONC or HNC in an engineering discipline (mechanical, electrical, or related).
* Completed a recognised engineering apprenticeship.
Technical Skills
1. Electrical
* Experience with AC drive systems.
* Electrical fault‑finding on industrial and mobile plant systems.
* Knowledge of PLC equipment and basic diagnostic techniques.
* Knowledge of hybrid and DC battery systems and related control and safety requirements.
1. Mechanical
* Strong mechanical fault‑finding and diagnostic skills.
* Experience in engine diagnostics, welding, turning, and general fitting.
* Practical experience with hydraulic systems.
IT & Personal Skills
* Competent with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
* Ability to work autonomously and as part of a multi‑disciplinary engineering team.
* Hands‑on problem‑solving approach.
Required Criteria
* Full UK driving licence.
