Offer description

The role – a real “feel good” job

This is one of those roles that offers an emotional lift for the person doing it and for the learners you support in equal measure. You genuinely make a difference to young people’s lives—helping them start the day feeling safe, calm and motivated, and ensuring they get home safely at the end of the day.

It’s ideal for someone with life experience, maturity and the confidence to pass that on positively—someone who enjoys local driving (Doncaster to Scunthorpe), takes pride in doing a job properly, and values building meaningful relationships supporting the learner in a number of different ways throughout the day.

About the learners

You’ll be working with young people aged 16+ who have an Education, Health & Care Plan (EHCP). Learners may have a range of complex needs, including SEMH, ASD, ADHD and potentially additional learning difficulties and/or disabilities.

What you’ll be doing

As a Life skills support and community Driver, you’ll play a key part in ensuring learners begin and end their day safely, positively and on time. Your responsibilities will include:

1. Safely transporting learners to and from Skills Centre Plus sites, following agreed routes and schedules
2. Completing daily vehicle safety and maintenance checks in line with legal and organisational requirements
3. Taking responsibility for learner safety and safeguarding while in transit and throuought the day whilst offering support
4. Creating a positive start and finish to the learning day, helping learners feel safe, supported and motivated
5. Communicating professionally with centre teams, parents and carers when appropriate
6. Promoting positive behaviour and wellbeing during journeys

What we’re looking for

We’re looking for someone dependable, calm and people-focused—someone who can be a reassuring, consistent presence for learners.

You’ll likely be:

7. A confident driver who enjoys local routes and is comfortable with regular travel between Doncaster and Scunthorpe
8. Naturally good at building rapport and creating a positive atmosphere
9. Safety-minded, punctual and proud of maintaining high standards
10. Mature, steady and able to handle sensitive situations appropriately
11. A clear communicator who works well with colleagues, parents and carers

You’ll need:

12. A strong commitment to safeguarding and learner wellbeing
13. To maintain cleanliness and basic upkeep of the vehicle
14. To follow procedures and record/report issues accurately
15. A full UK driving licence

What will make you stand out from the crowd:

MIDAS (Minibus Driver Awareness Scheme) certification

First Aid qualification
Previous experience working with young people with SEND
Experience in an educational or care environment
Basic mechanical or vehicle maintenance knowledge
Mini bus entitlement (D1) - although this is not essential

Why this role matters

This is a hugely important role: for many learners, the journey sets the tone for the day. You’ll be helping young people feel secure, supported and ready to learn—then ensuring they end the day positively too. It’s practical work with real purpose, and the impact is immediate and meaningful.

As soon as a suitable candidate is found for this role we reserve the right to close the job advert ahead of the closing date, so please do not delay in submitting your application.

As part of our commitment to safeguarding there will be numerous safeguarding checks that form part of the recruitment process including an Enhanced DBS check and you will be required to complete a self declaration form at interview stage. Please note this role is also exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act and it is an offence to apply for the role if you are barred from regulated activity.

Acis are committed to equality and diversity, are a proud member of disability confident and welcome applications from any applicant who feel they hold the essential skills to fulfil the role. We recognise that people need flexibility in their role and we’re happy to discuss flexible working options with the successful candidate in addition to any aid with interviewing that you might need
