Wakehurst Discovery and Access Volunteer

Wakehurst is a place for everyone—but we recognize that access to green spaces and the heritage sector isn't equal for all. In line with RBG Kew’s which aims to ‘Extend Our Reach’ by reducing barriers to accessing nature, Wakehurst launched the Participation Team in early to bring this vision to life.

Through meaningful partnerships with our local community the Participation Team has co-designed a series of inclusive, accessible participatory projects that welcome new visitors and actively break down barriers to engaging with Wakehurst. These initiatives primarily support individuals who may face social, psychological, physical, or financial challenges in accessing nature.

Over the past two years, the team's reach and impact have grown significantly—engaging more than 6, underserved local community members with our landscapes, science and horticulture. We offer a range of programmes, from Youth Work Experience placements to 5 week well-being courses.

As we continue to grow, we are excited to recruit more Discovery and Access Volunteers.

Our Discovery and Access volunteers will be integral to creating a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere to our community focused programmes. These programmes include:

🌱 Sow and Grow: Monthly hands-on gardening workshops for all abilities

🧠 Dementia-Friendly Guided Tours: Inviting exploration through gentle, sensory engagement

🌿 Nature Natters: A social prescription wellness walk and talk group

🎨 Glow Wild Lantern-Making Workshops: Sparking creativity and community connection

🌷 Spring into Community: Our free community festival

Together, our goals are to:

Inspire action for nature
Connect children with science and the natural world
Nurture tomorrow’s environmental leaders
Build lasting, meaningful partnerships

Whether you're new to volunteering or returning with experience, this is a chance to make a difference, connect with others, and help shape a more inclusive future for all who visit Wakehurst. We especially encourage individuals with lived experience of access requirements to apply, as our communities have told us how important it is to see themselves reflected in the team that welcomes them to Wakehurst.

Please note:

Dates vary but events usually occur mid-morning or early afternoon on Mondays or Tuesdays. Flexibility is essential, but the ability to attend all events is not expected.
