Job overview

A highly experienced, knowledgeable and educated member of the OUH Parkinson’s Service who is able to work autonomously making high level decisions to treat and manage the health needs of patients at different stages of their Parkinsons diagnosis. The Specialist Nurse will work in partnership with patients and their families/carers in assessing and discussing their care needs andwill be expected to work as part of the Parkinson’s MDT to assess and plan appropriate management of care.

The role will be crucial in supporting the delivery of Parkinson’s treatments in particular advanced drug therapies, and, monitor effectiveness. Patients will be assessed in outpatient nurse-led clinics at the John Radclliffe Hospital and in some cases visiting patients in their own homes or community hospitals. The role will also provide inpatient support (where needed) and training for staff in clinical areas less familiar with Parkinson’s. This may include offering advice when Parkinson’s symptoms may change and educating about medicines used to treat Parkinsons symptoms and importance of managing time critical medicines. The role will also be crucial in providing inpatient advice and support and staff training where patients may be admitted already established on advanced drug therapies (Apomorphine, Duodopa and Foslevodopa)

This role will require a current UK driving license.

Main duties of the job

·To be clinically and professionally responsible for developing and providing comprehensive clinical care, specialist advice, and support to patients with Parkinson’s aswell as supporting their families and/or informal carers

·To work closely with the PD MDT to continue supporting delivery of existing Parkinson’s advanced drug treatments available for certain patients with complex Parkinsons (such as Duodopa and Apomorphine) but to also support the setting up and delivery of Foslevodopa which is recently become available

·To conduct regular nurse-led follow up’s (in person, by telephone or by Attend Anywhere video platform, which ever is appropriate) with Parkinsons patients who have recently started advanced drug infusion therapies, and once stable liaising with the patient’s usual local Specialist Parkinsons/Neurology Nurse to continue clinical support locally to where the patient lives

·To contribute towards patients/carers education on Parkinsons and the non-pharmacological and pharmacological treatments available to support compliance and safety.

·To provide regular opportunities for education and training for health care professionals both in the hospitals and where required in the community settings (ie community hospitals or care homes) on advanced drug therapies ( Apomorphine, Duodopa & Foslevodopa)

·Post holder is expected to have a commitment to undertake non-medical prescribing course (NMP)
