Senior Systems and Solution Architect
Location: Belfast, United Kingdom. This role involves leading a systems team designing air defence and fire control systems, delivering world‑class performance to meet customer needs. Working within an agile multi‑discipline team, responsibilities cover the whole product lifecycle from requirements capture and analysis through to defining the system architecture, behaviour and building, testing and verifying the solution.

Responsibilities
* Understand customer and business needs, leading to requirements capture, definition and development.
* Understand how the user will deploy the product to inform system design.
* Define system architecture, interfaces, behaviour and flow‑down requirements.
* Develop models and simulations to inform and define the system design, behaviour or performance.
* Provide technical guidance and leadership in optimising design through trades, analyses and prototyping.
* Diagnose complex system faults found during integration and test.
* Define verification activities and assess evidence to ensure the delivered product is compliant with requirements.
* Capture the design, decisions and rationale in associated models, specifications and other technical artefacts.
* Lead the system design through the defined engineering process and design reviews.
* Work within the project leadership team to deliver the design on time, within budget and quality constraints.
* Perform the role of Design Authority on a project, taking ownership of the solution.
* Provide coaching and mentoring to other team members and share knowledge within the wider systems team.
About you
* Significant experience in designing systems.
* Demonstrated leadership experience.
* Experience as an architect or similar role.
* Experience in requirements capture and product specification.
* Strong knowledge of defence systems such as C2, fire control, sensors, effectors, etc.
* Experience in defining system architectures, interfaces and behaviours.
* Ability to design for non‑functional, EMC, environmental, eco, security and safety requirements.
* Ability to design for appropriate legislative and regulatory requirements.
* Familiarity with defence standard requirements and common interface protocols.
* Proficient in system design processes, methods and tools.
* Knowledge of modelling methods (SysML, etc) and defence architectural frameworks (e.g. MODAF, etc).
* Solid understanding of the systems, hardware and software engineering lifecycles.
* Excellent analytical skills with proven capability to shape solutions out of complexity.
* Excellent communication skills able to articulate complex concepts to technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
* Self‑motivated, innovative, with a can‑do and lead‑by‑example attitude.
Essential qualifications and skills
* Bachelor’s Degree (BEng, BSc) in a numerate, scientific or engineering subject.
* Experience in system design activities:
o Establishing requirements to drive design.
o Designing a system to meet defined requirements.
o Developing a system architecture.
o Utilising architecture methodology to describe a system to other functions.
o Building, integrating and/or testing a system to meet defined requirements.
* Critical thinking & decision‑making skills.
* Problem‑solving and innovation skills.
* Effective written and verbal communication skills.
* Delivery of projects, including overcoming barriers and making things happen.
* Working within a multi‑disciplinary team under pressure.
Desirable
* Post‑graduate degree in an engineering discipline.
* Chartered Engineer or working towards professional accreditation.
* Knowledge of air defence systems and technologies.
