Our projects are more than just your opportunity to make your mark. They’re an opportunity to stretch, test and develop your expertise. Join our Living Places team as an Ecologist in East Sussex,and you’ll deliver complex work that really matters to our business, and the world around you.
In this role, you will provide practical, solution-focused ecological support and advice to contract and operational teams on construction sites, ensuring ecological requirements are met in line with programme, budget, and quality standards. This includes conducting surveys, inspections, and watching briefs, advising on legal and company standards, and implementing effective on-site measures. The role also involves liaising with design teams, clients, and stakeholders, supporting Biodiversity Net Gain initiatives, and delivering ecological consultancy services. A key focus is promoting continuous improvement in on-site ecological practice through pragmatic, cost-effective solutions that enable project delivery.
What you'll be doing
* Provide pragmatic advice and site support to operational teams on ecological requirements
* Develop and support implementation of ecological management plans
* Build relationships with regulators, clients and design teams, and internal teams.
* Support site compliance with ecological legislation and coach construction teams in applying controls and mitigations in pragmatic, cost-effective ways
* Ensure the company environmental management system is maintained in line with changing standards and legislation and liaise with senior team lead on changes required
* Support investigations and report on ecological incidents
* Undertake habitat suitability assessments and protected species surveys
Who we're looking for
The following qualities/experience are essential:
* Good knowledge of ecological management and mitigation
* Educated to degree or Masters level in Ecology or related subject
* Good understanding of ecological legalisation for development
* Good level of commercial awareness
* Full driver’s licence and flexibility to travel
* Good understanding of environmental management for construction sites
* Good understanding of the utilities/construction/engineering operating environment
* Literate in MS Office – Word, Excel, Outlook
* Good interpersonal skills
* Excellent communication skill
* CIEEM Membership
* Experience of working on large scale infrastructure construction projects
The following qualities/experience are desirable:
* At least one protected species survey licence
