Specialist Healthcare Scientist - Radiation Imaging

Radiation Protection Adviser in diagnostic radiology to join the friendly team at UHBW. This is a Band 8a Specialist Healthcare Scientist role, with the option of a Band 7 linked‑progression post for candidates working towards RPA certification.
Based at Bristol Royal Infirmary, the Radiation Science Services team provides RPA, MPE and Physics services to a wide range of diagnostic and interventional departments, within two large NHS Trusts, three breast screening services and several private and academic sites. You will be joining two RPAs in a team of fifteen scientists, technologists and trainees. The role involves travel to partner sites and is part of the wider Diagnostic Medical Physics Group.
Main duties of the job
* Act as Radiation Protection Adviser in diagnostic and interventional radiology, providing highly specialised scientific and technical advice.
* Serve as scientific lead for environmental monitoring, IRR17 audits and radiation risk assessments.
* Provide quality assurance service for radiation imaging and associated equipment.
* Specify, evaluate and provide advice on procurement of new diagnostic x-ray equipment.
* Deliver education and training for medical physics and other staff.
* Encourage and participate in research, development projects and clinical audit.
Person Specification
* Able to communicate complex radiation protection information effectively to professional groups, patients, clinical colleagues and support staff.
* Capable of making judgments involving complex calculations such as estimating radiation doses to staff and patients.
* Demonstrates honesty, integrity and respect for confidentiality, with a patient‑care orientation.
* Takes initiative to influence colleagues in developing and introducing scientific systems.
* Able to manage tasks flexibly and respond to enquiries promptly.
Qualifications and Training
* BSc Honours in a physical science or equivalent.
* Radiation Protection Adviser certification with RPA2000.
* MSc in Medical Physics or a closely related subject.
* HCPC registration (Clinical Scientist or Radiographer) or RCT (Clinical Technologist).
* PhD or equivalent in a relevant subject.
Knowledge and Experience
* Experience providing practical radiation protection advice in diagnostic and interventional radiology.
* In‑depth understanding of relevant legislation, national standards and professional guidelines.
* Advanced theoretical and practical knowledge of diagnostic radiology physics procedures.
* Experience evaluating and testing specialist x‑ray equipment.
* Knowledge of RPA (IRR17) registration and maintenance.
* Experience delivering teaching and training on complex subjects.
Skills and Abilities
* Ability to plan and organise highly specialised clinical services.
* Good physical accuracy and dexterity for measurements on test equipment and complex imaging devices.
* Capacity to design and develop specialist image and data processing software.
* Proficiency in computer systems, spreadsheets and databases for complex calculations.
* Ability to present scientific papers at national and international conferences.
* Physical capability to lift moderate loads and transport equipment up to 8 kg.

Salary
£49,387 to £64,750 per annum, pro rata for part‑time roles.
