Overview
We are looking for an experienced and motivated Area Operations Manager to join our operations team. The role covers operation and maintenance across multiple sites with embedded power projects, typically 2-10 MWe at 11 kV grid level and larger plants between 20-50 MWe at 33 kV, 66 kV and 132 kV grid level. Reporting to the Head of Operations, the Area Operations Manager oversees a region organised into three Areas, each managed by an Area Manager, with a number of sites and a team of engineers.
Key responsibilities
* Responsible for safe and efficient operation and maintenance of the company’s flexible power generation plant and associated equipment across the designated area.
* Optimise plant availability and uptime while complying with H&S, quality standards and budgetary parameters.
* Manage, lead and motivate a team of Operations Engineers; provide support, training, coaching and mentoring as necessary; ensure staff are trained, competent and aware of health and safety responsibilities.
* Optimise plant availability, attend sites to provide hands-on support for complex maintenance tasks and unplanned breakdowns to minimise downtime.
* Maintain reporting on the status of the area’s equipment using designated IT systems; keep plant records and spare parts up to date; identify and resolve problems, escalate to management as needed.
* Monitor performance against budgets and KPI targets; implement remedial action plans with full cost/time analysis as required.
* Manage external contractors and suppliers, including performance and quality reviews; provide maintenance services to external customers as required.
* Support handover of newly built sites from Construction into Operations to ensure readiness of plant, equipment, facilities and personnel.
* Adhere to all Company Policies & Procedures (e.g., H&S, Environmental Management, Integrated Management Systems, financial/accounting systems) and keep continuous improvement as a focus.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
KNOWLEDGE
Essential: Detailed understanding of MWM, MTU, Jenbacher or Caterpillar gas engine management and control systems, and operation/maintenance of such plants. Desirable: Experience of managing Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS); knowledge of three-phase electrical systems.
SKILLS
Essential: Good written and numerical skills, IT literacy, ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines. Desirable: Working knowledge of CMMS systems.
EXPERIENCE
Essential: Detailed experience of Internal Combustion Engines (base-load power generation), leadership and strong teamwork. Desirable: Experience operating battery energy storage systems; working knowledge of data and analytics in an engineering maintenance context.
QUALIFICATIONS
Essential: Educated to at least ONC level or equivalent, or qualified by experience in Plant Engineering or a relevant discipline. Desirable: CITB Competence Scheme Card, IOSH Working Safely.
