Specialist Clinician Neurodiversity

We are seeking an enthusiastic and skilled Specialist Clinician to join our Neurodevelopmental Diagnostic and Support Team in Bedfordshire.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary team including Community Paediatricians, Specialist Nurses, Speech and Language Therapists, and other professionals, you will lead high‑quality autism and neurodevelopmental assessments for children and young people, and deliver feedback to families.

You will provide specialist input into ADOS‑2 and developmental assessments, support differential diagnosis across neurodevelopmental conditions (including DLD and autism), and contribute to the ongoing development of local ND pathways.

We welcome applicants from a range of professional backgrounds, including Speech and Language Therapy, Nursing, Occupational Therapy and Psychology. Experience working with children and young people with neurodevelopmental differences is essential.

In return, you will join a supportive MDT with access to regular supervision, opportunities for specialist training (e.g. ADOS‑2), and involvement in service development and innovation.

Main duties of the job

* Discuss and agree assessment outcomes with patients, carers and other health care professionals, promoting health education and self‑management.
* Deliver feedback to families regarding the outcome of the MDT assessment.
* Provide clinical opinion on the differential diagnosis of neurodiversity in pre‑school and school‑age children.
* Collaborate with the ND pathway lead to support implementation of the wider ND pathway across the county.
* Use highly specialist clinical skills to manage a specialist caseload of children with ASD and other special needs.
* Generate written reports and care plans, reflecting specialist knowledge.
* Collaborate with the wider team and community Paediatric service in developing pathways and intervention development for Autism and neurodevelopmental difficulties.
* Demonstrate a high level of clinical judgment and autonomous practice.
* Present and communicate complex condition‑related information to patients, carers, families and the multidisciplinary team, supporting decision‑making relevant to patient management.
* Conduct assessments including ADOS, joint assessments, report writing and contribution to care plans.

Job responsibilities

Job Purpose: The post holder will work within an established multidisciplinary team of Community Paediatricians, Specialist Nurses, Speech and Language Therapists and other professionals in Bedfordshire, participating in the assessment and review of children with neurodevelopmental conditions. The role includes leading diagnostic ND assessments, delivering feedback to families, and supporting ND pathways across Luton and Bedfordshire.


Qualifications and Training

* Recognised degree or equivalent.
* Professional registration – HCPC or NMC essential.
* Successful completion of specialist short courses including ADOS training.
* Membership of relevant professional bodies (e.g., CEN).


Experience

* Well‑established knowledge of a range of clinical disorders, assessments and therapeutic interventions in the specialist field.
* Experience of carrying out supervision and appraisals.
* Experience working with children and young people with neurodevelopmental conditions including Autism and ADHD.


Knowledge & Skills

* Knowledge of neurodevelopmental disorders and current legislative frameworks.
* Autonomous caseload management and multi‑agency partnership working.
* Effective communication with patients with communication difficulties.

Address: Edwin Lobo Centre – Redgrave Gardens, Luton or Child Development Centre – Kempston, Bedfordshire.

Salary: £47,810 to £54,710 per annum (pro‑rata).

Contract: Permanent.

Working pattern: Full‑time; Job share, flexible working, compressed hours.
