KPMG’s Innovation Reliefs and Incentives team is made up of tax, engineering, science and technology specialists delivering expert advice to a broad range of clients across almost every industry sector. As one of the largest teams in the industry, our continued investment in innovation advisory means that we seek engineers, scientists and tax professionals to join us on the next exciting phase of our growth.
Our team works with clients from owner managed business, to large multinational organisations, and we are looking for an Assistant Manager with a strong financial, accounting and tax background to assist clients across a suite of innovation advisory services including R&D tax Credits, Patent Box, R&D Allowances, Grants and Innovation Advisory services. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with an Honour/ Post Graduate Degree in finance, accounting and tax or other related discipline that either has industry financial experience or working knowledge of the R&D tax legislation.
Role and Responsibilities:
* Develop claim methodologies with project teams, including costing approaches, and deliver R&D tax relief and Patent Box claims for submission to HMRC, taking responsibility for managing the delivery of these claims.
* Lead or co-lead meetings with financial client stakeholders; provide expert advice on innovation advisory services (R&D, Patent Box, Grant Applications) and support technical specialists in meetings with senior client stakeholders.
* Write accurate, substantive claim documents supporting R&D tax claims, including reviewing documents prepared by junior colleagues.
* Manage the preparation of technical and financial client deliverables, ensuring correct quantification of claims and documentation of complex projects for submission to HMRC or funding bodies.
* Assist in managing client projects across tax and technical work streams, balancing conflicting resource requirements.
* Lead projects and advise clients on applying complex legislation to real-world situations.
* Liaise with HMRC specialists to facilitate claim agreements.
* Build and maintain strong client relationships, both existing and new.
* Develop internal networks within the wider tax practice.
* Take responsibility for your work quality, risk management, and coaching junior staff.
Skills and Qualifications:
* Honours or Post Graduate Degree in finance, accounting, tax, or related discipline.
* Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills for applying legislation to practical scenarios.
* Strong communication skills to lead discussions and explain complex concepts to diverse audiences.
* Ability to produce high-quality documentation and reports for senior stakeholders.
* Project management skills and workload management capability, including delegation.
* Tax and accounting qualifications such as CTA, ACA, or ACCA are advantageous but not essential.

The Claims and Incentives team is part of our Corporate Tax department, helping clients secure tax savings through government-sponsored reliefs and incentives. The team includes Fixed Asset Tax Services (“FATS”) and Innovation Reliefs & Incentives (“IRI”), supporting clients with fixed asset expenditure and innovative activities. The IRI team works with a diverse group of professionals, including scientists, engineers, IT experts, accountants, and tax advisers, spread across the UK to meet client needs efficiently.
