Chartwell Unit is based at Maidstone Hospital and is an eight-chair unit specialising in the care of patients with haematology malignancies and other blood disorders. The unit delivers systemic anti-cancer therapies (SACT), alongside supportive care and blood product support for patients undergoing chemotherapy.

Applicants must hold a recognised SACT qualification and a valid UKOMS passport. They will demonstrate a high level of clinical expertise in the safe delivery of SACT. The post holder will be an experienced and competent practitioner demonstrating effective leadership skills and the ability to provide safe, evidence‑based and patient‑centred care in line with NHS policies and guidelines.


Main duties of the job

* Ensure the provision of a high standard of care to all service users using the systematic approach to individualised care, using the model appropriate to the clinical area.
* Maintain a high level of competent practice within the Scope of Professional Practice.
* In conjunction with the CNS haematology team/Lord North, ensure effective and continual updating/increased professional competence.
* Work within the framework of the NMC Code of Professional Conduct at all times. Provide information and advice to patients and their carers on haematology treatments.
* Apply, disseminate and encourage research‑based practice in relation to care of patients within the Unit.
* Adhere to the Data Protection Act, Health and Safety at Work Act and have knowledge of the Trusts Grievance and Disciplinary Policies.
* Advise and support other staff appropriately. Be a fundamental member and collaborate with other disciplines in ensuring a system that enhances and maintains good relationships and channels of communication within the department.
* Maintain responsibility for the safe custody, checking, witnessing and recording of all drugs in accordance with the Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells Trust policy.

Job responsibilities

Appointment to this post will be subject to a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service Check at Enhanced level. (Enhanced level now includes regulated checks against vulnerable adults and children). If a role involves regulated activity and requires a DBS check with a barred list check, you cannot apply if you are on the barred list.

All successful applicants will be required to complete our corporate trust induction once a start date has been agreed.

Following your corporate induction you will be expected to attend the Trusts 2‑week Induction Programme for RNs, NAs, RMs, ODPs and Paramedics. The programme is full‑time (please email mtw‑professionalstandards@nhs.net if this is problematic) and will involve travel to both Trust sites. The programme includes supernumerary shifts in the clinical area, classroom‑based sessions and e‑learning.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* First level registered nurse registered with Nursing and Midwifery Council.
* SACT trained.
* Evidence of further education since qualification.
* Evidence of ongoing CPD.
* Advance Life Support provider.


Experience/Knowledge

* Thorough and up‑to‑date knowledge of nursing theory and best practice at the level of a newly qualified nurse.
* Understanding of equality and diversity and how to apply it to self.
* Understanding of the NMC Code and its requirements for own practice and behaviour.
* Insight and understanding of current issues in nursing and the NHS.
* Proficient clinician and clinical role model.
* Understanding of audit and benchmarking processes.
* Use of Electronic documentation/EP.


Skills

* Able to assess, plan, implement and evaluate specialist care delivered to patients/clients and give relevant advice and information to patients and relatives.
* Ability to administer prescribed medication including transfusion of blood and administration of blood products.
* Good communication skills and ability to deal with sensitive information, including dealing with distressed relatives, care of terminally ill and other challenging situations.
* Is able to manage team and individual performance.
* Good interpersonal skills.
* CVAD competent.
* PICC placement.
* Commitment to teaching others.

This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.

£39,959 to £48,117 a year per annum pro‑rata.
