The position focuses on developing and improving processes, controls, and policies that govern how the organisation uses, evaluates, manages, and contributes to open‑source software‑across both community‑driven and commercially supported open‑source models.
This role sits within the Technology Engineering Practice function and requires close collaboration with engineering teams and Legal. Candidates must be comfortable analysing licensing implications, understanding how open‑source components flow through complex systems, and applying governance standards within large enterprises.
Key Responsibilities
* Assess and clearly explain the implications of open‑source licences to both technical and non‑technical teams
* Contribute to training and awareness programmes across engineering to improve understanding of open‑source licensing and usage
* Document and summarise technical, operational, and legal risks associated with open‑source components and licensing terms
* Categorise licences not identified by tooling into licence groups (e.g., Permissive, Weak Copyleft, Copyleft, Restricted)
* Analyse reports from software licence‑scanning tools to identify missing, inconsistent, or inaccurate licence information
* Review and recommend updates to existing open‑source policies, standards, and guidelines
* Collaborate with external vendors to improve the accuracy and completeness of licence reporting within tooling
* Support the development and enhancement of automation related to open‑source licence evaluation
Candidate Profile
The successful candidate must demonstrate:
* Practical, hands‑on experience working with open‑source software‑across usage, evaluation, governance, contribution, or integration
* Strong analytical and organisational skills
* Ability to work autonomously with high attention to detail
* Excellent communication skills for translating complex licensing requirements
Experience Requirements
Required (non‑negotiable)
* Strong understanding of open‑source licensing models, including how they apply in real engineering environments
* Direct experience working with open‑source software (not limited to FOSS contributions; includes usage, evaluation, integration, or governance)
* Ability to distinguish between open‑source licensing models and free‑to‑use or commercial licences
* Interest and experience in software development
Desired (advantageous)
* Background or training in copyright or related legal principles
* Experience working in a controlled or regulated industry
* Exposure to DevSecOps practices
* Experience within an agile delivery environment
* Familiarity with licence evaluation and compliance tools (e.g., Nexus IQ Server, Black Duck, or similar)
