A commercial, city-based hostel welcoming guests from the general public, including tourists, workers, gig-goers, families and small groups, where a warm, value-led staff culture are supported, to deliver great service and contribute ideas for improvement. Key Responsibilities Guest experience and front-of-house Create a warm, welcoming and inclusive atmosphere for all guests from arrival to check‑out. Act as the main point of contact for guest queries, feedback and complaints, resolving issues promptly and professionally. Coordinate front desk and housekeeping to keep rooms and communal areas clean, presentable and ready for the next guests. Support group bookings on shift, ensuring arrival, departure and stay requirements are met. Operations, safety and compliance Take operational responsibility for the building during your allocated shifts, acting as the responsible person for health and safety. Ensure fire safety procedures, emergency protocols and safeguarding standards are followed at all times. Carry out routine safety checks, including scheduled fire alarm tests, building walkarounds and accurate incident logging. Record and report incidents, near misses and maintenance issues promptly, and liaise with on‑call contractors or suppliers where required. People Leadership on shift Supervise staff on shift, ensuring the right staffing levels, clear task allocation and effective communication. Provide clear direction and day‑to‑day support, addressing performance or conduct concerns in a fair and timely way. Support the induction and ongoing development of new or less experienced staff. Promote a positive, respectful and inclusive working environment in line with YMCA Brunel Group values. Commercial focus and systems Operate booking, payment and POS systems accurately and in line with procedures. Maximise occupancy and revenue during shifts through effective room management and appropriate upselling. Ensure all bookings and shift reporting are completed accurately and on time. Support stock control for consumables and amenities, protect YMCA assets and follow loss‑prevention procedures. Monitor the building condition and ensure contractors follow site rules, safeguarding and health and safety expectations. Background and experience Experience in hospitality or customer service, or transferable experience where you have worked directly with the public in a busy environment. Confidence working in a guest‑facing role with a wide range of people and situations. Experience taking responsibility during a shift, staying calm under pressure and making sound decisions when issues arise. Skills and behaviours Strong customer service skills with a friendly, professional approach. Clear communication skills, able to give direction and feedback to colleagues. Good organisational skills and attention to detail when using systems and completing paperwork. Flexible, proactive and willing to take on different tasks to ensure an excellent experience for our guests.
