Consultant in Anaesthetics
Job overview
This is a substantive appointment to ensure continuous delivery of services.
All job plans within the Anaesthetic department are offered in accordance with the 2003 Consultant Contract and in line with best‑practice principles outlined by both the British Medical Association and NHS Employers.
This will typically involve 8.5 programmed activities of direct clinical care (DCC) and 1.5 of core supporting professional activities (SPA) for a full‑time appointment. Direct clinical care will typically be in the form of theatre sessions but may also include other activity for example pre‑operative assessment clinics.
All Anaesthetic Consultants in GHNHSFT work annualised contracts allowing for a greater degree of flexibility in job planning for both the individuals and the department.
Main duties of the job
Clinical Responsibilities / Key Responsibilities
* Independently and safely conduct anaesthesia for a range of surgical specialties across any of the sites supported by GHNHSFT to the standard expected of a Consultant Anaesthetist.
* Support resident doctors both during planned care and whilst on‑call.
* Participate in a 1:16 non‑resident on‑call rota.
Professional Development, Education and Training
* Provide conditions for improved training opportunities in line with national and local recommendations.
* Participate in the undergraduate teaching programme and deliver structured teaching to medical students and trainees.
* Assist and participate with the development of postgraduate training for all grades of trainee and other staff as appropriate.
* When agreed, act as Educational Supervisor to junior and SAS medical staff, responsible for their appraisal and personal development planning.
Management and Leadership
* Provide medical information for the development of systems appropriate for Trust needs.
* Participate in departmental consultant and senior staff meetings, as well as other departmental, divisional and Trust meetings.
* Attend regional and national meetings as necessary.
* Undertake all work in accordance with Trust procedures and operating policies.
* Permanent consultants are expected to rotate through directorate clinical management and leadership roles if interested.
Communications and Working Relationships
* Collaborate with all departments and external providers, communicating effectively and respectfully with resident doctors, AHPs, nursing staff and other team members.
Clinical Governance
* Maintain CPD requirements for appraisal and revalidation.
* Participate in annual appraisal including multi‑source feedback.
* Adhere to the Trust’s adverse clinical incident policy.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
* Ability to act independently as a final clinical decision maker and support on‑call resident doctors.
* Be able to attend either acute hospital site within 30 minutes.
* Recognised equivalence in anaesthesia (CCT or CESR) within 6 months.
Qualifications
* CCT or CESR (or Royal College of Anaesthetists recognised) equivalent in Anaesthesia (within 6 months).
* Full GMC registration with license to practise, on specialist register.
* MBBS/MBChB or equivalent.
* FRCA or equivalent.
* Advanced Life Support (ALS).
* Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS) or PALS.
* PROMPT Maternity.
Clinical Experience
* General training leading to CCT in anaesthesia or other specialty.
* Experience in pre‑assessment clinics.
* Experience as on‑call anaesthetist at consultant level.
* Experience in obstetric anaesthesia.
