Overview
The Regional Rehabilitation and Mobility Service (RREMS) provides clinical engineering expertise to 12 wheelchair services across the North‑east of England and North Cumbria.
In addition to this post, the team comprises 12 Clinical Technologists in Rehabilitation Engineering, 2 Rehabilitation Engineering Technologists and 6 administrative staff. This position is based at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle and James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.
The responsibilities include undertaking engineering modifications to wheelchairs, specifying and providing powered wheelchairs, and delivering technical, biomechanical and safety‑related input to multidisciplinary wheelchair service teams. The service also collaborates closely with the Approved Wheelchair Repair Contractor.
Responsibilities
* Provide technical aspects of RREMS throughout the region, including at Approved Wheelchair Repairer contractors’ and District Wheelchair Services’ premises as required.
* Prescribe, design, manufacture or modify bespoke mobility and assistive technology/engineering solutions to meet the needs of individual clients or carers.
* Lead projects by independently managing a caseload of referrals that includes initial assessment, problem solving, risk analysis, design, manufacture and documentation.
* Ensure the safe introduction, delivery and hand‑over of manufactured or modified products into clinical, domestic and educational establishments, providing clear verbal and written instructions for safe use.
* Comply with all relevant legislative, national and local requirements for engineering and safety.
* Operate all engineering/scientific equipment safely and efficiently.
* Report adverse incidents to appropriate organisational establishments.
* Carry out powered wheelchair environmental risk and accessibility assessments.
* Undertake additional duties within the scope of RREMS to meet the changing needs and circumstances of the service.
* Contribute to research and development projects.
Qualifications and Requirements
Applications are invited from candidates who hold a degree level qualification or have equivalent experience in an appropriate discipline and have demonstrable relevant experience having completed a recognised engineering or technical apprenticeship or training course.
Successful applicants will be required to enrol onto the IPEM Clinical Technologist Training Scheme, which results in professional registration as a Clinical Technologist with RCT or AHCS.
RREMS is seeking two suitably qualified, capable and motivated engineers to join the team. The successful candidate will have specialist knowledge of wheeled mobility equipment and possess excellent communication, planning and organisational skills, well‑developed patient handling skills, and familiarity with the regulatory requirements relevant to the scope of the service.
Knowledge of IT packages such as Microsoft Office, 2D CAD and 3D Modelling is essential, as is a full valid driving licence because considerable travelling is involved on a day‑to‑day basis.
All candidates are required to obtain a DBS check prior to the offer. The DBS certificate will be paid through a salary deduction from the first month’s pay.
