Overview

To work as a member of the team in the provision of care and support services for people with autism, learning disabilities and/or associated behaviors; which aims to maximise the potential of individuals in line with ordinary life principles.

May be required to take charge of the home/service in absence of the senior and managers.


Skills / Abilities

Required:

* An Enhanced DBS check
* Settled status or the right to work in the UK
* Level 3 Diploma in Residential care, young people’s workforce or equivalent preferred but not essential
* Proven ability to work on own initiative and work as part of a team
* Knowledge and understanding of issues relating to people with learning disabilities and autism
* A commitment to a service which provides support to vulnerable individuals, and which is respectful and according to the individuals\' wishes
* Good communication skills (written, verbal and non-verbal communication aids). Ability to communicate effectively with young people, colleagues, family members, managers and other professionals
* Commitment to training and development

Desired:

* Experience in a similar setting
* Knowledge of care planning systems
* Other relevant training e.g. Team Teach
* Commitment to undertake relevant training and development
* Ability to work towards and complete a Level 5 diploma within a fixed time frame
* Interest in autism and a passion for inclusion

Main Responsibilities

1. Care: Assist the senior/manager in the running the home according to its policies and ethos.
2. Assist the senior/manager in ensuring that each young person has their needs met through effective assessment and care planning. Review and monitor care plans/contribute to review reports as directed.
3. Support and participate in client's life-long learning plans and social events and recreational activities in line with care plans, trips out and holidays.
4. Act as a key worker to a specified individual young person, taking on responsibility for specified areas of care and support. This includes ensuring all medical needs are met and supporting the individual to advocate his/her own needs and wishes.
5. Facilitate and support in decision making. Promote choice and involvement. Utilise preferred communication method, e.g. PECS
6. Ensure all staff members work in a way that demonstrates an understanding of and commitment to the rights of people with learning disabilities.
7. Consistently apply de-escalation strategies developed in response to challenging behaviours, and contribute to the review and development of any such strategies.
8. Encourage and enable young peoples to maintain acceptable levels of personal and environmental hygiene.
9. Record information about the young people and ensure communication with Staff Members.
10. Once trained, administer medication in accordance with policies and procedures, and ensure that medical emergencies are dealt with appropriately. Adhere to the medication policy at all times.
11. Ensure that young people\’s personal property and clothing is maintained to a high standard and report any requirements to the senior/manager.
12. Promote good practice in the team in accordance with ordinary life principles, and in line with all policies and procedures.
13. Practice maximum integrity in all dealings with young people\’s personal and financial affairs, respecting the privileged relationship.


Communication

* Participate in staff and young people meetings as and when required. Maintain appropriate records as directed.
* Contribute to reports as requested.
* Report incidents on the correct forms at the end of each shift.


Training and Development

* Maintain professional knowledge and competence.
* Attend mandatory training days/courses, on or off site, as and when required in and out of work hours.
* Complete all online training allocated in a timely manner.


Health & Safety

* Report immediately to the senior/manager, any illness of an infectious nature or accident incurred by a young person, colleague, self or another.
* Understand, and ensure the implementation of, the House Health and Safety policy, and Emergency and Fire procedures. Follow and undertake risk assessments.
* Report to the senior/manager and if necessary to site maintenance, any faulty appliances, damaged furniture, equipment or any potential hazard.
* Promote safe working practice
* Ensure special cleaning rota is followed exactly and recorded.


General

* Assist the senior/manager in reviews of service delivery standards, and in developing best policy and practice that meets young people\’s needs.
* Carry out administrative tasks as and when required.
* Make visitors feel welcome.
* Promote and ensure the good reputation of service
* Ensure that all information of confidential nature gained in the course of duty is not divulged to third parties as stated in the confidentiality policy and data protection policy.
* If you are unable to report for duty, notify on call/manager/senior at the earliest possible opportunity.
* Ensure all equipment is clean and well maintained.
* Carry out any other tasks that may be reasonably assigned to you.

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent

Salary: £12.30- £12.85 per hour
