Job Description:
JOB PURPOSE
Under the direction of the class teacher/outreach teacher/Education Authority, assist with the educational support and the care of the pupil(s) with special educational needs who are in the teacher’s care in or outside the classroom.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The precise duties of the post will be determined by the principal/outreach teacher/Education Authority officer.
SPECIAL CLASSROOM SUPPORT
* Assist the teacher with support and care of pupils with special educational needs, including enabling access to the curriculum and attending to personal needs such as dietary, feeding, toileting, etc.
* Develop an understanding of the specific needs of the pupils supported.
* Assist with authorized programmes (e.g., Education Plan, Care Plan), participate in their evaluation, and encourage pupil participation.
* Contribute to the inclusion of pupils in mainstream schools under the teacher's guidance.
* Assist with operational difficulties and non-invasive medical/clinical issues related to pupils' disabilities.
* Support the implementation of behavioral management programmes as directed.
* Assist pupils in moving around the school and on and off transport.
GENERAL CLASSROOM SUPPORT
* Help pupils learn effectively both in groups and individually by managing the learning environment, clarifying instructions, ensuring the use of equipment, motivating pupils, and promoting independence.
* Be aware of school policies, procedures, and confidentiality issues.
* Establish supportive relationships with pupils.
* Prepare and produce resources to support pupils and materials for play.
* Supervise groups or individual pupils during activities, including extracurricular and off-site activities, as directed.
* Assist with off-site activities following appropriate risk assessments.
* Supervise and support pupils during play, cloakroom, and toileting activities, including administering prescribed medicines and dealing with minor injuries.
* Ensure a safe environment for pupils and report any signs needing urgent attention.
ADMINISTRATION
* Assist with classroom administration and record-keeping of pupils' progress.
* Contribute to progress reports and provide feedback to teachers.
* Assist with duplicating materials, creating charts/displays, and cataloging resources.
OTHER DUTIES
* Attend in-service training.
* Assist work placement students with tasks.
* Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the post.
