Reference: bae2043c Job title: Personal assistant (PA) Location: LS8 – Chapeltown/Potternewton Park/Chapel Allerton Job purpose: To assist with a variety of tasks which will enable/assist the employer/person who needs care and support to live their personal and social life according to their wishes and interests. About the employer: I am looking for a Personal Assistant to help build and maintain my son’s social skills and independence as well as access activities in the community and at home, when required. My son is 18 years old and currently attends Post 16 educational provision in Leeds. My son is a friendly, outgoing and charming young person and has many of the common characteristics associated with Williams Syndrome. Activities my son enjoys include the following: listening to rock music, going to gigs swimming going to groups and social activity sessions. wildlife interests e.g. birdwatching Main duties: Social duties, for example, support with/to: Personal care Support to source and access interests and hobbies Ensure my son is supervised and safe at all times Support my son with activities as discussed with me Support my son to build and maintain their social skills and independence Supporting and monitoring their healthcare needs Supporting the learning of new skills or interests Keep in touch and socialise with family and friends Attend social groups and activities Attend medical appointments Attend social events such as music gigs or the cinema Attend work e.g. voluntary or paid employment (if required). Personal care, for example, support with handwashing, dressing, administering medication, performing exercises/activity. Domestic duties, for example, support with grocery shopping, planning and cooking nutritious meals and snacks, cleaning, changing linen, laundry etc. These duties may vary from day to day. Type of person that you/they are looking for: Values, honest, reliable, punctual, non-judgemental, ability to build good relationships based on trust and respect, flexible, adaptable, easy going, able to work alone, positive, willingness to travel, understands equality and diversity and has a good sense of humour. An understanding of Williams Syndrome and/or other autistic spectrum conditions. Due to the nature of this role including occasional personal care and the possibility of supporting my Son overnight during breaks away from home (or at home where a sleepover may be required) the potential employer will be considering the applicant’s suitability to perform these tasks. NB: The person being supported has a younger sibling who also has complex additional needs, and this can present additional logistical challenges in day to day life. Any applicant would need to be understanding of this and have the ability to be reliable, flexible and adaptable. What you can expect to receive: An induction will be given to the employee, and this will cover working in and out of the home as well as roles, expectations, and items such as working arrangements, health and safety and queries/how to deal with any issues that might arise. Training will be offered as required. For example, the following can be provided:- Safeguarding Moving and Handling First Aid Awareness Person Centred Care Various other training courses are available depending on the specific role of Personal Assistant and access to these can be discussed. Regular supervision will be offered on a formal and informal basis, as required. This will depend on employer availability/time constraints, but the aim will be to discuss such as:- Any further training or development that might be needed to enable you in your role Any challenges/barriers encountered in the role Any concerns Safeguarding issues Personal circumstances that might affect the role as PA and what can be done to help Holidays, sickness/absence and any other employment related matters The role offers a competitive rate of pay (see below), flexible working and (if required) a work place pension. Hours of work: Up to 4 hours per week (weekdays, as required) – to be discussed and mutually agreed. Up to 8 hours per week (weekend, as required) – to be discussed and mutually agreed. If sleepovers are required this will be discussed in advance and the hours will be agreed, payable at the rate for sleepovers (see below). During school holidays/outside of Term time extra hours are available – typically 6 hours per week – to be discussed/reviewed on an ongoing basis and mutually agreed. NB: Pay and hours as calculated by UKCIL below are based on the lowest rate of £12.60/hr. Exact pay will depend on hours worked as weekend/weekday pay rates are higher (see below). Exact remuneration to be discussed with the applicant since this will also include reimbursement for expenses incurred (e.g. car travel whilst supporting my son). Rate of pay: Weekdays – 14.00 per hour Weekends – 16.00 per hour Sleepovers – 12.60 per hour Skills, qualifications and experience: Essential : Driving licence Car and appropriate insurance Able to swim Confidentiality Good at building relationships Preferred : Computer literate Good communicator Likes dogs or other pets A good listener Ability to support people with neurodiverse behaviours.
