Brief Description
We are looking for a proactive and analytical individual with strong risk, assurance, and governance expertise to join our Procurement & Supply Chain function. You will work with complex data, spot emerging risks, and translate insights into practical guidance that strengthens how we buy and manage goods and services. Positive relationships, constructive challenge, and influence at all levels are essential.
About the role (External)
Join a supportive and collaborative Commercial & Procurement team that plays a key role in keeping Britain’s railways running efficiently and safely. Work closely with a wide range of stakeholders across the business to deliver value for money, ensure compliance, and support strategic objectives.
What does the average day look like?
Work independently across the full procurement lifecycle, reviewing category strategies, sourcing activity, and supplier management outputs, and providing clear, constructive feedback to help teams deliver best value and meet regulatory requirements. Balance assurance with pace, planning and overseeing a first line of defence model that supports effective procurement and commercial decision‑making. Manage external experts, reviewing assurance outputs, and carrying out second line audits with regional teams. Deliver training and awareness sessions to build confidence in our commercial assurance approach, and champion better risk management across Route Services. Support the development of the team, sharing knowledge, mentoring others, and helping to foster a positive, high‑performing environment.
Essential Criteria
* Educated to a degree standard or equivalent work experience
* Experience of undertaking commercial Risk and Assurance activities
* Experience in undertaking sourcing activities within a regulated environment
* Ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously
* Ability to manage change and dispute resolution
* Experienced with cross‑functional collaborative working methods
* Politically aware, with the ability to use direct and indirect influencing strategies
* Excellent stakeholder management skills with the ability to effectively engage with stakeholders at all levels
* Demonstrable level of problem‑solving experience in a large, complex organisation
* Detailed understanding of the Utilities Contract Regulations 2016 or Public Contract Regulations 2015 and their employment on the sourcing of complex goods, works and services contracts
Desirable Criteria
* Detailed knowledge of the UK Rail Industry
* Experience within a highly regulated infrastructure or engineering environment
* In‑depth experience of preparing and reviewing contract documentation
