Job Summary
Based in a woodland in East Bergholt, Circles Alternative Education engage young people though practical activities in keeping with the natural environment around us, as well as nurturing positive social interactions and communication amongst their peers.
We are seeking a positive and supportive person to join our professional and innovative team in the role of a Group Mentor/Leader. This position will be working with senior aged learners (aged but may be required to assist with primary learners on an ad-hoc basis.
This position will be working with young people who require additional support in addition to their school or tutoring. Ideally you will have some practical skills gained in a working environment to engage our young people in projects, although self-taught experience is fine.
You will be required to work core hours of 08:45 to 16:00, with hours outside of these times flexible to suit. The role is mainly term time only but can be flexible over the school holidays to build hours where desired.
The main focus of the role is to work with small groups of young people, predominantly outdoors in our woodland setting, to engage them in activities and projects that promote teamwork, understanding and personal development. Topics and activities are limitless, but a dynamic, therapeutic and fresh approach is essential. Experience in forest/woodland work would be advantageous. Qualifications and experience in either youth work and/or practical based teaching is preferred but this role would also suit someone with a passion to help young people overcome issues and find their way into young adult life. We are a company that encourages self-development, so qualifications in teaching/youth work can be gained while in post.
Salary range - £13 - £16 p/h dependent on experience.
The successful candidate will:
* Be empathetic to reasons of disengagement and educational needs.
* Knowledge of strategies and tactics to re-engage young people.
* Ideally have some practical experience, either by trade or self-taught, to create small construction type projects and engaging activities.
* Support and develop personalised activities for young people to help them return to education, as well as facilitating group discussions that encourage teamwork and social skills development.
* Be able to implement outdoor activities.
* Look for creative ways in which to support every child with their personalised learning/reintegration programmes.
* Communicate with parents/carers and other professionals, providing daily contact logs and detailed reports when needed.
* Be able to attend professionals meeting around supporting the young person.
* Be able to contribute to our positive, safe, caring and supportive environment.
* Have good time management and be able to effectively plan activates in advance.
* Monitor and assess student progress, providing feedback and guidance as necessary.
* Assist in behavior management strategies to promote positive interactions among peers.
* Serve as a role model, demonstrating appropriate behaviors and attitudes.
* Be competent in the basic use of Microsoft Word, Excel and email.
This role is predominantly based outside all year round, so a love of the outdoors is essential.
