School Caretaker - HP21
Pay Range: £16.16 - 17.34p/h inc. hol. pay (£28,129 - £30,174p/a on a permanent basis after 13-15 weeks)
Hours: 37 hours per week
Shift Pattern:
1. Week 1: 06:00 - 14:00
2. Week 2: 12:00 - 20:00 (alternate weeks)
The Role
PPM Recruitment are currently recruiting for a School Caretaker to join a well-established education site. Working as part of a small facilities team and reporting into the Facilities Manager, you will play a key role in maintaining a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors.
This is a hands-on, varied position requiring flexibility, initiative, and a proactive approach to site maintenance, security, and health & safety.
An Enhanced DBS check will be required
Key Responsibilities
Security & Site Safety
3. Opening and securing school buildings and designated areas
4. Carrying out regular security patrols and identifying risks
5. Monitoring fire safety equipment and supporting fire drills
6. Operating alarm systems and CCTV (where applicable)
7. Liaising with emergency services and security contractors
8. Providing emergency access to the school site when required
Maintenance, Cleaning & Health & Safety
9. General building maintenance, DIY tasks, and minor repairs
10. Internal and external litter picking to maintain high site standards
11. Waste management and preparation for collection
12. Graffiti removal, gutter and drain clearance, and specialist cleaning tasks
13. Supporting and coordinating cleaning staff
14. Carrying out routine H&S checks including legionella testing, fire alarms, and emergency lighting
15. Operating and maintaining heating and lighting systems
Porterage & Events
16. Moving furniture and equipment across the site
17. Setting up rooms for assemblies, exams, open evenings, and events
18. Coordinating deliveries and distributing post and parcels
Improvements & Reactive Works
19. Responding to faults logged via the school portal
20. Recording defects and liaising with contractors where required
21. Completing minor decoration and improvement works
22. Carrying out small repairs and installations (shelving, notice boards, doors, windows etc.) as agreed with management
Person Specification
Essential Experience & Skills
23. Experience in building maintenance, DIY, and basic decorating
24. Knowledge of site security and health & safety procedures
25. Full UK driving licence
26. Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently
27. Proactive, self-motivated, and able to use initiative
28. Good standard of English literacy and numeracy
29. Basic IT skills
30. Willingness to undertake training in H&S (e.g. working at height, manual handling, COSHH)
31. Willingness to undertake First Aid training
32. Confident using power tools and site equipment
