Offer description

We are seeking a Cardiac Physiologist who is ready to take the next step in their career to join our team at Harefield Hospital, part of Guy’s and St Thomas’ Foundation Trust.

Perform a wide range of clinical and technical diagnostic procedures within the field of cardiology.

Act as a clinical role model, supporting the delivery and management of efficient and effective electrophysiology and cardiac device services at Harefield.

Serve as a specialist resource in EP and Devices, contributing to the Trust’s reputation as a leading centre for the development and implementation of best clinical practice.

Take a key role in the training, continuing professional development, and overall performance of staff within Cardiac Rhythm Management and the wider Cardiac Physiology Department.


Recruitment and Retention Premium

The position includes a Recruitment and Retention Premium (RRP) of £5,275, in addition to the basic salary (non‑pensionable). The RRP is subject to review on 31st March 2026.


Key Responsibilities

* Mitigate immediate risk of arrhythmia or arrest during cardiac investigations by monitoring patient ECG, reporting rhythm changes, providing life support and external defibrillation.
* Participate at a high level of competency in other sections of the Cardiac Physiology Department when necessary, including invasive and non‑invasive cardiology, cardiac theatre, ITU and ward monitoring, cardioversions, temporary cardiac pacing and IABPs.
* Participate in the hospital on‑call rota if required and in waiting list initiatives in the catheter labs, catheter lab over runs and private cases.
* Assist in moving patients from examination couch to trolley/chair, during pacemaker/ICD implantation, other catheter laboratory procedures, ITU and cardiac theatre procedures and pacemaker/ICD follow‑up clinics.
* Assist in cleaning clinic/catheter laboratory equipment and furniture at the end of investigation/procedure including infected cases, move heavy equipment, and wear a lead apron whilst working in angiography laboratories.
* Overcome objections or complaints from patients/patient relatives regarding procedures using persuasion and tact, and perform the duty of acting patiently and sympathetically toward patients who may be extremely anxious.
* Attend mortuaries at associated hospitals to download data from Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators and to render the device safe for explant prior to cremation and/or post‑mortem.
* Participate in Cardiac Physiology Department and Trust meetings, providing input and agreement to development of purchasing policies and investigation protocols for the Department; assist in management and implementation of these policies and report on budget consequences to the leads for EP and Devices or the Principal Clinical Scientist.
* Participate in patient improvement services meetings to maximise catheter laboratory times and improve patient flow.
* Assist in the recruitment of appropriately qualified staff, formulate staff rotas, induct new members, and play a major role in the appropriate training of all staff involved in CRM at Harefield.
* Provide appraisal, counselling and guidance to department staff, set and maintain standards of appearance and professional attitude, and uphold the professional code of conduct as required by the SCST, RCCP, AHCS and HCPC professional bodies.
* Participate in and provide specialist input to all Trust meetings; contribute to a programme of quality control and technical audit as part of the Trust’s clinical governance programme.
* Liaise with the Clinical Engineering Department and equipment suppliers to ensure all non‑disposable equipment in the EP lab / Pacing / ICD area is maintained appropriately and remains operational, and ensure all relevant MHRA notices are acted upon appropriately.
* Ensure patients, their relatives, and visitors are acknowledged in an appropriate and friendly manner; respect patient privacy, dignity, religious and cultural beliefs, and answer telephone calls correctly and direct them to the appropriate person or department.
* Use and develop effective communication skills, facilitate liaison and working relationships with other disciplines, promote positive staff morale, and be aware of procedures involving patient/visitor/staff complaints.
* Provide input to the department’s annual budget request, participate in departmental stock control and ensure adequate stock for the specific cardiology section.
* Enter data into the departmental databases, write reports on cardiac investigations performed and input these to the relevant computer‑based system.
* Instigate, coordinate, participate in and report on research into appropriate aspects of Cardiac Physiology or management issues for publication or internal use.
* Represent the Trust at regional, national, and international conferences and on working groups as appropriate, and abide by the Trust’s core behaviours and all related policies including standing financial instructions, research governance, clinical governance, patient and public involvement, codes and practices, and health and safety policies.
* Complete any other duties commensurate with the grade as requested.
