About the Role As a Personal Tax Senior, you'll take full responsibility for managing a diverse portfolio of personal tax clients, from straightforward self-assessment returns to complex tax planning matters. You'll work independently on most assignments, provide technical tax advice, and act as the primary point of contact for clients. You'll also supervise and mentor junior tax staff whilst contributing to the growth and development of the tax department. Key Responsibilities Personal Tax Compliance & Returns Prepare and review self-assessment tax returns for individuals, partners, sole traders, and trustees Manage a diverse portfolio of personal tax clients with varying complexity levels Calculate income tax liabilities, capital gains tax, and other personal tax obligations Ensure accurate completion and timely submission of all tax returns and computations Review tax returns prepared by junior staff for accuracy and compliance Identify and claim all available reliefs, allowances, and exemptions Prepare partnership tax returns and allocation of profits/losses to partners Handle trust and estate tax returns including income tax and capital gains tax Manage non-resident and domicile tax matters including split-year treatment and remittance basis Prepare provisional and amended tax returns where required Capital Gains Tax (CGT) Calculate and advise on capital gains tax for individuals and trustees Prepare CGT computations for property disposals, share sales, and other asset disposals Advise on principal private residence relief, lettings relief, and business asset disposal relief Calculate and claim entrepreneurs' relief (now business asset disposal relief) where applicable Advise on CGT planning opportunities including use of annual exemptions and losses Handle share reorganisations, takeovers, and corporate actions for CGT purposes Prepare real-time CGT returns for property disposals within 60-day deadline Tax Planning & Advisory Provide proactive personal tax planning advice to clients Advise on income tax efficiency including dividend planning, pension contributions, and gift aid Develop tax-efficient strategies for property investors and landlords Advise on inheritance tax planning including lifetime gifts, trusts, and estate planning Provide guidance on tax-efficient investments (ISAs, pensions, EIS, SEIS, VCTs) Advise on remuneration planning for owner-managers and directors Support clients with retirement planning and pension tax matters Identify and implement tax saving opportunities across all taxes Prepare tax projections and forecasts for clients' financial planning Client Relationship Management Act as primary point of contact for personal tax clients Build and maintain strong, trusted relationships with clients Conduct client meetings to discuss tax matters, planning opportunities, and compliance Communicate complex tax matters clearly and in plain English to clients Respond to client queries promptly and professionally Provide excellent client service that enhances the firm's reputation Identify opportunities for additional services and cross-selling Support business development activities and client retention HMRC Correspondence & Enquiries Handle HMRC correspondence, queries, and notices on behalf of clients Manage tax enquiries and investigations including full and aspect enquiries Prepare responses to HMRC information requests and queries Negotiate settlements with HMRC where appropriate Handle penalty appeals and mitigation submissions Manage payment on account applications and time-to-pay arrangements Deal with coding notices, tax calculations, and refund claims Liaise with HMRC agents' helpline and correspondence teams Technical Compliance & Quality Maintain up-to-date knowledge of personal tax legislation, case law, and HMRC guidance Ensure all work complies with current tax law and professional standards Apply anti-money laundering (AML) procedures and client due diligence Ensure compliance with professional conduct in relation to taxation (PCRT) standards Review and quality-check work prepared by junior staff Contribute to the firm's tax technical resources and knowledge base Participate in technical training and CPD activities Provide technical support and guidance to colleagues on complex tax matters Team Leadership & Supervision Supervise, mentor, and develop tax assistants and trainees Delegate work appropriately and monitor progress Review tax returns and computations prepared by junior staff Provide constructive feedback, coaching, and on-the-job training Support recruitment and training initiatives within the tax department Contribute to a positive, collaborative team environment Practice Development Contribute to the growth and development of the tax department Support marketing and business development initiatives Participate in client seminars, webinars, and technical updates Build relationships with professional contacts (IFAs, solicitors, estate agents) Represent the firm professionally in the local business community Identify opportunities to expand the personal tax service offering What We're Looking For Essential Qualifications & Experience Fully qualified tax professional (CTA, ATT, ACA, ACCA with tax specialism, or equivalent) Minimum 5 years' personal tax experience within an accountancy practice environment Comprehensive knowledge of UK personal tax legislation including income tax, CGT, and IHT Strong experience preparing and reviewing self-assessment tax returns for diverse client types Proven ability to manage a personal tax portfolio independently Experience handling complex tax matters including non-domicile, trusts, and estates Demonstrated ability to provide tax planning advice to clients Experience managing HMRC enquiries and correspondence Strong knowledge of capital gains tax including reliefs and exemptions Experience supervising and reviewing junior staff work Proficiency with tax software (CCH, Alphatax, Digita, or similar) Desirable Skills & Experience Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) qualification Experience with inheritance tax planning, lifetime gifts, and trusts Knowledge of non-resident and domicile tax matters Experience with property tax matters including furnished holiday lets and rent-a-room relief Understanding of employment-related securities and share schemes Experience with tax investigations and settlements Knowledge of international tax matters and double tax treaties Experience with high-net-worth individuals and complex tax affairs Business development and networking experience Experience
