Brighton College is seeking to appoint a Director in Residence to start in September 2026.
The Department
We have one of the most thriving drama departments in the country. The new performing arts building, completed last year, places drama at the core of our future. The state‑of‑the‑art theatre, drama studio, and rehearsal spaces enable unrivalled technical and design support for directors. We welcome applicants who may also be considered for both the LAMDA Teacher and Director in Residence positions.
The department produces a range of productions each year, including the Senior Production, Lower Sixth Production, Middle School Production, Year 9 Production, Year 8 Production, and Year 7 Production. Our teaching team consists of three full‑time staff members, a Drama PGAT, the Director in Residence, and four LAMDA teachers. In addition, we offer a plethora of extracurricular activities such as improvisation clubs, a young writers club, scholars workshops, theatre design clubs, drama outreach with local schools run by senior pupils, theatre trips, and digital screenings. Our cocurricular programme is complemented by the Young Playwrights’ Showcase, House Film, and the House Duologue Competition.
Role Specification
The Director in Residence will:
* Direct two productions a year, with varying programmes each year.
* Work with the theatre staff to support pupil stage crews throughout the production process.
* Commit to and promote equality, diversity, and inclusion.
* Commit to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, including completing required safeguarding training and ensuring up‑to‑date policies are read and understood.
* Understand and comply with procedures and legislation related to confidentiality.
