An opportunity has arisen to recruit a temporary Chemistry Technician to join the HSE Team on a 12-month fixed term contract, primarily supporting EP Ballylumford Power Station and providing assistance for EP Kilroot Power Station. The successful candidate will provide an effective and efficient chemistry service for the business, ensuring compliance with statutory and company requirements. In addition, they will provide condition monitoring and day to day management of the associated chemistry systems and plant, manage chemical inventory and support the safe, efficient, profitable and long term operation of the plant. Key Responsibilities Reporting to the HSSE Team Leader, the key duties and responsibilities will be: Day to day and long-term management of boiler and cooling water quality, which includes providing condition monitoring for quality control including: logging of system variables; sampling; laboratory analysis; managing records; interpretation of results; troubleshooting and making informed recommendations for actions to Shift Leaders. Management of chemical inventory to maintain adequate stocks, including ordering, reordering, usage, storage, access and disposal. Managing COSHH records, providing advice and assistance on COSHH to other departments for chemicals / substances used or present onsite. Carrying out the role of Selected Person (Atmosphere) under the Safety Rules, which includes providing Selected Person Reports for confined space working under the Safety Rules. Monitoring of confined space atmospheres for hazards and assigning precautions, taking responsibility and providing confirmation to the SAP that specified areas are safe for work. Managing the day-to-day operation of the Water Treatment Plants (RO, EDI, Ion Exchange, etc), which includes providing condition monitoring for quality control including: logging of system variables; sampling; laboratory analysis; managing records; interpretation of results; troubleshooting and making adjustments to maintain the safe, reliable, efficient and effective operation of the Plants. Assisting in the planning and implementation of chemical cleaning and preservation for Reverse Osmosis and Electro-deionization membranes and filtration systems. Responsibility for sampling and the internal/external laboratory analysis of fuel, lubricating and transformer oils, which includes managing records, interpretation of results, troubleshooting and making informed recommended actions to maintenance and production departments. Responsibility for the routine calibration and verification of inline, portable and laboratory analytical equipment. Responsibility for maintaining good housekeeping within the laboratories, controlling the stocks of equipment and materials available, preparation of high-quality reagents and standards and managing equipment maintenance. Identifying faults and problems on site, reporting them and follow up with troubleshooting, investigations and corrective actions, including creating notifications, Risk Assessments and Method Statements where necessary. Providing assistance to other departments for testing and chemical analysis, including liaising with the Operations department to ensure chemistry procedures, instructions and guidelines are followed correctly. Providing supervision of contractors, consultants, analysts and various working parties by taking on the role of Nominated Competent Person for issue of permits under the Safety Rules. Managing the servicing and calibration of personnel issue gas detection equipment, ensuring compliance of the water emission points from the PPC Permit and keeping daily records to produce end of year reports. Consulting with key stakeholders NIEA, HSENI and NI Water on site matters and produce any necessary reports required. Assisting with the control of asbestos management on site, REACH and legionella management. Planning and managing projects including: Boiler Water Chemistry; Management of Change; Reverse Osmosis Plant projects; chemical storage; ECP; Piloting; commissioning. Developing and implementing of chemistry procedures, instructions and guidelines. Assisting in strategic planning for chemistry related plant and equipment longevity by managing R&D projects to yield process improvements or keep up to date with technical developments. Maintaining the necessary policies and procedures to ensure that the requirements of all relevant health, safety and environmental legislation and ISO 45001 / ISO 14001 are met. Contributing to maintenance and outage planning, attending meetings when required. Assisting in the preparation and execution of the HSSE/Chemistry Department budget. Developing specifications for chemistry related contracts (chemicals, equipment etc.), review tenders, award and manage contracts. Extensive use of SAP system including workorders, inventory and purchasing elements. Skills, Knowledge and Expertise Background Essential: Strong working knowledge of water treatment technologies, particularly the production of RO/DI and demineralised water. Strong working knowledge of relevant HSE legislation. Practical experience of good laboratory practices and environment sampling. Knowledge of relevant chemical philosophies, existing and proposed technical legislation, policies and legal obligations. Desirable: Previous experience within a power station or the electricity sector. Experience of operations, including boiler water chemistry. Experience with Safety Documents (Permit for Work) systems. Ability to understand, operate and predict consequences of plant operation. Knowledge of planning techniques and project management. Behaviours Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to influence key stakeholders. Good technical, analytical and labroatory skills. Collaborative team player with a positive approach and outlook. Excellent IT skills (microsoft word, excel, SAP). Proven ability to plan and deliver programs or projects. Qualifications Essential: Educated to third level qualification in a relevant science or technical discipline, e.g. Chemistry, Chemical Engineering. Recognised Health & Safety and Environmental qualification (e.g. NEBOSH IOSH, IEMA).
