Costain has secured extensive work across the water sector this year to support the AMP8 investment cycle. We have been appointed by Northumbrian Water to the Living Water Enterprise to help shape and deliver its strategic infrastructure upgrade programme, with contracts valued up to approximately £670m over 15 years.
The Commercial function is responsible for effectively managing commercial risks, liabilities, exposures, and opportunities within all our trading relationships.
The role of a Senior Quantity Surveyor involves managing all assigned commercial activities within the project environment. The Senior Quantity Surveyor will be involved throughout the project lifecycle, aiming to minimize costs and maximize value for money while maintaining standards and quality as per contract and stakeholder expectations.
This role may operate independently, managing a small commercial team, or under the guidance of a senior commercial manager.
Responsibilities
* Efficient management and issuance of notices and correspondence.
* Identifying contractual and commercial risks and opportunities for the Contract Leader.
* Preparing and agreeing payment applications and certificates.
* Maintaining registers of variations, delays, and claims.
* Implementing company commercial policies and procedures consistently.
* Assisting with monthly valuations and claims.
* Collaborating with customer’s commercial and project teams.
* Producing pre-contract tender reports and negotiations.
* Generating monthly cost reports, forecasts, and management reports.
* Advising on value management and risk mitigation.
* Managing supply chain enquiries, negotiations, and contract finalizations.
* Implementing change management and cost control measures.
* Monitoring procurement plans and benchmarking.
* Liaising with site teams, supply chain, and client representatives.
* Providing contractual advice to project teams.
* Understanding various construction contracts and their implications.
* Ensuring compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations.
Essential Skills and Experience
* Significant post-graduate commercial experience in construction with a proven track record.
* Strong financial and commercial acumen.
* Practical, logical, and methodical approach.
* Experience with office management and document control systems.
* Proficiency in contractual correspondence, report writing, and financial documentation.
* Negotiation and leadership skills.
* Strong analytical abilities.
* Knowledge of legal, contractual, and construction principles.
* Confidence to influence stakeholders.
Desirable Skills and Qualifications
* Previous experience in the water sector.
* Creative problem-solving skills.
* Experience in procurement and contract strategy development.
Qualifications
* Essential: RICS / CICES accredited degree.
* Desirable: Full membership with RICS / CIECS or nearing completion.
