Biomedical Scientist

We are looking for a registered Biomedical Scientist to join our Histopathology team. The role focuses on routine histology, IHC, specialty techniques, microscopy QC, and troubleshooting technical issues. Familiarity with automated IHC machines and molecular platforms is desirable. The position is Monday to Saturday and offers full training and a dedicated mentor for competency assessment.
Main duties of the job
* Demonstrate knowledge and experience in routine histology, IHC/specials, and microscopy QC
* Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues
* Familiarise with automated IHC machines and molecular techniques
* Participate in staff and team development at the Band 5 level, supporting training and assessment of associate practitioners and medical laboratory assistants
* Understand ISO 15189 standards, health & safety requirements, audit and training/education techniques
Qualifications and registration
* HCPC registration
* BSc in Biomedical Science or equivalent level 6 apprenticeship
Experience
* Hands‑on experience in a histology/cellular pathology laboratory, including tissue fixation, processing, embedding, microtomy, and routine staining
* Experience working within standard operating procedures (SOPs) and established protocols
* Experience within a quality‑managed system and routine quality control procedures
* Ability to recognise practice limitations and escalates concerns appropriately
* Experience applying safe laboratory practices, including appropriate use of PPE and adherence to health & safety regulations
Communication
* Communicate clearly and effectively, verbally and in writing, with laboratory colleagues and senior staff
* Raise concerns, report errors and escalation issues to senior staff
* Work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary laboratory team
Skills
* Strong organisational and time‑management skills, prioritising workload to meet service demands
* Willingness and ability to develop skills and knowledge through training and continuing professional development (CPD)
* Maintain confidentiality and demonstrate professional judgement at all times
