About the role

Project Engineer – Power T&D (Laleham 132kV Substation Extension)

Company: Balfour Beatty
Location: Laleham Project, Ashford, TW17 0QR

Balfour Beatty is recruiting a Project Engineer to support growing demand within our Power Transmission & Distribution (T&D) team on the Laleham 132kV Substation Extension project. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in delivering a complex infrastructure project within a live HV environment, contributing to the long‑term expansion and resilience of the electricity network.

The Role

You will support the delivery of the full Laleham 132kV Substation Extension, including:

* Integration of new HV bays
* Upgrades to LVAC systems
* Supporting long‑term substation expansion works

Working closely with the Project Manager / Project Director and wider project team, you will have accountability for successful project delivery across all stages of the project lifecycle.

What you’ll be doing

* End to end M&E delivery: from detailed planning and temporary works on, pre‑commissioning/commissioning, and clean handover.
* Turn design intent into a buildable, safe, right first‑time plan; you’ll run task briefs, permits and ITPs, and keep quality tight with progressive assurance.
* Orchestrate interfaces with others across mechanical, electrical, P&C, civils and HV specialists; derisk energisation windows and coordinate OEMs and subcontractors.
* Drive the short interval schedule (lookaheads, constraints removal) and keep cost, change and risks visible and controlled.
* Champion Zero Harm and CDM; lead with clear RAMS, permits, isolations, and a “stop, think, act” mindset.
* Bring people with you: brief clearly, listen actively, and keep stakeholders (client and delivery partners) fully aligned.
* Lead and attend project reviews / project meetings.
* Have an awareness of the Digital Briefcase.
* Maintain accurate project records (progress, daily diaries etc.).
* Prepare both internal/external reports and liaise with stakeholders.
* Help ensure reports provide relevant information to enable informed, cost‑effective decisions in line with overall strategy.
* Help ensure scope and package assignment supports the team in coordinated working.
* Specify, understand, develop and implement technical information and drawings into delivery.
* Understand and specify plant and equipment requirements.

About you (skills & experience)

* Proven M&E delivery in substations, industrial or heavy infrastructure, comfortable with method statements, permits, ITPs, TQs, change, and site leadership.
* Confident interpreting drawings/specs and translating them into safe, sequenced work.
* Strong planner/communicator who keeps lookaheads realistic, removes blockers, and holds a calm line under time pressure.
* HNC/HND/Degree in Mechanical or Electrical (or equivalent). SMSTS/SSSTS, CSCS/ECS desirable; National Grid/substation experience a plus.

Desirable qualities & experience

* An organised, innovative and creative Project Engineer with knowledge and experience of working on Projects who is proficient commercial/project management communications.
* Experience in implementing safe systems of work.
* Experience in managing risks and change processes through solutions‑based approach to problem solving.
* Good interpersonal skills that enable working relationships to be developed at all levels across the business and be able to negotiate and influence.
* Discuss ideas and plans competently and with confidence.
* Communicate new concepts and ideas to technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
* Awareness and promotion of the benefits of diversity and inclusion.
* Demonstration of resilience and determination to succeed.
* Proactively develop others around you including junior members of the team.
* Identify and drive personal development.
* Proficient on O365.

Potential qualifications

* Holds or working towards a formal qualification in construction/engineering or equivalent industry experience.
* Holds or desire to work towards either the APM PFQ/PMQ.
* Holds CSCS and SMSTS or equivalent.
