Sheep Health Manager Animal Health and Welfare NI is an industry led not-for-profit partnership between livestock producers, processors, veterinary practitioners, and government. Our role is to facilitate the control and wherever possible the eradication of diseases of ruminants which are endemic in Northern Ireland. AHWNI is now recognized, nationally and internationally as the lead body in managing industry led intervention strategies for infectious diseases of ruminants in Northern Ireland. The Post This is a unique opportunity to lead on the development of resources and animal health initiatives to improve sheep health and welfare within the Northern Ireland Agri-Food sector. You will help to scope out intervention priorities, develop farmer-facing resources to assist flock keepers in improving the health of their flocks and lead on the development of sheep health intervention initiatives. Your work will focus on: Priority setting for sheep health interventions. Developing resources on sheep health and welfare to include best practice for infection and disease prevention. In collaboration with AHWNI veterinary staff to lead on the development and implementation of infectious disease control initiatives and programmes. Assist with the recruitment of farmers into AHNWI sheep health related initiatives as well as develop and maintain excellent working relationships with them. Manage the day-to-day running of AHWNI sheep health initiatives. Work with industry and research partners on sheep health related research projects. Provide knowledge exchange to farmers e.g. through press releases, face-to-face meetings, webinars, workshops or Agri-Food industry events. Assist with the provision of written and oral outputs from sheep health initiatives including the development of detailed factual outputs suitable for use by farmers, veterinary surgeons, DAERA officials, non-departmental public bodies, and other relevant non-government agencies. Assist as required with the day-to-day running of the AHWNI administration office. In conducting this work, you will be joining a small, dedicated team focused on improving the health of the Northern Ireland ruminant sector. While your primary focus will be on sheep health, you will become knowledgeable about the range of work carried out by AHWNI and will be expected to actively contribute to the wider work of AHWNI. Qualifications, experience, and competencies The successful candidate will need to demonstrate the following competencies and experience: A tertiary level qualification relevant to ruminant livestock production. An excellent understanding of the wider Agri-Food industry within Northern Ireland with a particular focus on sheep production. Excellent written and oral communication skills. The ability to manage time and projects efficiently including the management of accurate documentation. The ability to meet deadlines. The ability to work both independently and as part of a small team. A willingness to engage in lifelong learning in support of current and emerging work priorities. Evidence of effective working with farmers. Desirable Criteria A postgraduate qualification in agriculture or a related discipline. Experience of project management in the last 3 years including the ability to effectively plan, structure, and prioritise workstreams. A good understanding of endemic infection constraints on the Northern Ireland sheep sector. AHWNI wishes to recruit high-calibre employees and provide them with a fulfilling working experience.
